It was very touching. Both the mission of the Marines and the respect shown by the villagers towards them and the deceased struck a nerve.

My dad was in that part of the world in WWII; Army Corp of Engineers in Indonesia, building landing strips and hangers. I don't believe his group or any others were under fire like the Marines were, but given the proximity to Japan it was a dicey area to be in.

Great story.

The pilot of that Marine Corps KC-130 was LtCol Steve Falcom, who is himself a Pacific Islander. I served with him a long time ago aboard MCAS Futenma, Okinawa when we were both a lot younger.
