Thought I was going to be late to work this morning...

...but fortunately I pulled up behind a time machine!

Added a smile to my face on an otherwise crappy commute. DeLoreans were such huge pieces of crap that I'm always shocked when I see one on the road 🙂 I do understand there is a company in Texas (?) that has all of the available spare parts and will build you a new one to order with a better engine. For a 30 year old car, it's amazing how modern they still look.

I came close to buying one like 10 years ago when they were still cheap. Now it looks like they're around 40K+ in good shape with low miles. Missed the boat.

There are so many iconic 80's cars and outside the Supra from Fast and Furious, I can't see many "movie/tv show" cars being as appealing from the past two decades.

The new version of Miami Vice had some cool cars but it didn't stick.

Bad Boys 1 had that 911 Turbo
Bad Boys 2 had some Ferraris

In Transformers the affordable sports cars turned into machines haha.
That Need for Speed didn't boost appeal for that new Mustang coming out

Those BMW short Films from the early 2000's were cool and I still think that M5 with Madonna getting thrown side to side in was and is still cool. However, with the way digital distribution was back then it came out 5 years too early before youtube. 🙁

Last St. Patrick's day there was like 20 or so DeLoreans in the parade. I saw one on the street a few weeks ago. Sucks that these failed, as DeLoreans was responsible for some of the most iconic cars in history.

As a huge fan of Deloreans:

1. They are amazingly TINY in person.

2. The crash tests were not so good (thus I opted not to get one).

3. Yup, Delorean in Texas bought the rights & parts. They can build you one out of "new old stock" for around $60k last time I checked. They also have some engine upgrades available (upwards of 200HP, rear-engine). They also have a 100% electric option coming out.

It's an interesting car with an interesting history; I happen to love the 80's-style design & gullwing doors quite a bit. I did a research paper back in high school on John Delorean. The sting operation with the whole cocaine thing was pretty wild. That's why I learned he was the father of the GTO. The Delorean was severely neutered due to production & regulations at the time: they had to raise the car for bumper height requirements (you can now buy lowering springs to meet the original design), they used a horribly underpowered 130HP engine, and it was supposed to be an ultra-safe car, but...wasn't. It was slated to be the first car with airbags, but ended up with no airbags & a deathtrap Y-frame design, plus horrifically bad crash test results, along with little quirks like windows that don't roll down all the way. Still, I wub it

You didn't miss anything- Delorean owners are perpetually miserable

Those terrible under powered Renault built engines could barely make it 1000 miles without major service. They're dog slow too- 0-60's in the 10-11s range (my minivan does 9.0s 😀). Handling is also terrible- the heavy body made for terrible cornering.

Other than looking cool, there are absolutely no redeeming qualities in that car.

The late 80's Porsche 911 Turbos are incredibly hot, will still kill you, and go for top $$$$. The e39 M3 is very sought after, and the NSX has some place in that time line.

Future classics will certainly include the Pontiac G8 GXP (it did everything a BMW M5 did at 1/2 the price), the Saturn Sky Redline, The Mini Cooper JCW editions, and probably the Mustang Boss.

Ya me too man. I remember telling my wife that they were gonna get crazy expensive soon. One of those cars that has some special magic. The movies only added to its charm.

Some cars make you a kid all over again and this is one of them like a first year Countach. Magic!

I am now imagining Fritzo following the delorian in a VW bus with colonel Kadaffi holding a RPG

The whole Delorean fiasco was an example of promising something and not having the funds or resources to do it. The end result was due to compromises from Irish strikes and cost over runs. I'd be pissed if I ordered a car that was supposed to have 200 HP and got neutered to 130 HP by the time I got it.

That whole cocaine thing was a setup though, but it ruined his reputation. He had planned on making a new sedan:

I think he was also going to make a supercar (called the Sunfire(?)), but I can't find any sketches of it.

LOL! A VW bus might be about the only vehicle on the planet that is slower than a Delorean.
