Outpost has some airlink 8dBi Directional Antenna's for $5 here

My sisters laptop is upstairs and pretty much gets horrible wireless reception. Are these things pretty useful or efficient, or are they pretty much as useful as cell phone boosters.
 
I need more powr for my network too. Range is horrible with crappy speeds to the room next door.
For $5 there is not much to lose. I think I'm going to get a few of these.

And iirc, you can't return stuff from outpost to Fry's. There was an antenna on sale yesterday, but it was a one day thing only. Might pick it up just to test it out and wait for it to go on sale again.
 
how well do these things work?

my antennae is in the back of my computer which is stuck into a cabinet enclosure of my desk.... i can't get more than 85% signal strength whent he router is probably 100 feet from my puter

That's a helluva signal strength!! I get 50% at a computer 20 feet away. 🙁
 
I got some omnidirectional ones, the actual Linksys brand ones for my router, and they didn't do much of anything. Maybe stabilized the signal, but I was thinking I would go from the 65% I was at to high 80s or low 90s even. It didn't really budge at all, so I'd like to hear something about these directional ones, maybe the focused signal will help more?
I don't really want pie plates and tin foil all over the place either, otherwise I'd make my own. 🙂
 
my wireless is on the complete opposite side of the house, and one floor up. i avg 11mbps on my 54g network :/

having the router on a different floor definitely kills it

we have our router upstairs, and if i have my lappy in the living room downstairs, it is hard to get a reasonable signal good enough to stream mp3's from my machine upstairs

frustrating 🙁

Brand and model of router? That's horrid, unless there is significant environmental interference (steel beams, other devices on the same frequency, etc).

DLink DI-524.
It's hanging on the wall in my room. The room mates computer is not in the line of sight but his room is accross the hall and the signal has to go through 1 wall + some built in shelves and 2 doors.
 
damn, well i'm gonna goto fry's and probably pick up a couple and test them out. i'll post back with results. Guess lots of people have this problem

Oh ya im on a wireless network (not wifi) I just added the laptop to the wireless world lastnight! OVERDOSE ON 2 SCREENS of anantech at the same time ;]

Failed to ask one other important detail: brand and model of card(s) in question, including other cards in the immediate area (namely, roommates), and their respective signal strength.

Have personally found in non-roaming wireless implementations - that is, a situation where one merely needs to broadcast to a fix location or locations - that one of (or more, as the situation warrants) the WRT54G/GS routers with a 3rd party firmware in Client or WDS mode works very well. Not only are these devices externally powered, but one can (with the appropriate firmware) increase the signal strength quite a bit. They even interface well with non-Linksys brand routers/APs.

We are all using Xterasys XN-2522g cards.

I see thet the Linksys has 18dBm output power versus the Dlink with only 15dBm, that's twice the power.
 
well this was pretty retarded. Picked up an airlink booster from Fry's, but the antenna on my netgear isn't removeable, so I couldn't do anything with it
