Those who smoke

Why did you start? Why did you allow yourself to smoke so many that you got addicted? Why do you continue?

coming from someone who at one time both parents smoke

I probably don't qualify since I don't smoke everyday; however, I enjoy the relaxing effects of a cigar or a good clove now and then.

smoking is smelly, bad for your health, bad on computer equipment/furniture - can't figure out why people start either. The smell was enough to convince me to never try it. That and then finding that I'm allergic to it.

I smoke cigars and only outdoors. I am not addicted to anything and frequently go up to 6 months between them. I enjoy my cigars much the same as you would enjoy a fine wine or a good beer. It's my vice, what are you going to do, vote for a tax increase?

alright to those of you who smoke the occasional cigar, is it possible to smoke the occasional cigarette and not get addicted to the point of spending $700/year? Or do cigarettes not 'satisfy' as well as cigars do?

Yes, definitely. But I think cigarettes could be the nastiest things to smoke given all the available options.

Agreed.

I'd be kidding you if I told you the average cigar I smoked was under $5 though

Cigars are not a poor man's smoke.

I wonder if dutchmasters and phillies manufacturers know that people don't get them to smoke as cigars... 😛

Hey, someone read into my "all available options" part. 😉

I started to smoke hookah about once a week because it was a good way to start the weekend and relieve some stress that the week added on. If it matters, I smoke maybe a cigar a year.

I haven't moved to cigarettes, nor have I shifted to pot, cocaine, pcp, or crystal meth, as some of the drug "awareness" posters spout.

I started to relieve stress from school. I am not addicted interestingly enough...I can be a social smoker when I want but when I get home I do not crave it. Back in the day when I did smoke everyday it was more of a routine than addiction. Something like telling myself "Ok...just finish one more lab report and then you can go and have a cig". It became more like a reward thing for me becasue there just isn't anything like a cig to put the mind at ease for a while. I don't like drinking becasue it gives me a headache and I never liked drugs becasue the feeling lasted too long. I still think one cig is one of the best rewards that a person can give themselves...but then again I'm not addicted. For those who smoke packs and packs per day and indoors in their homes and such I think that would be more of a problem.

Crazy time of my life, tried a ciggy and enjoyed it, provided an escape. Then I didn't smoke for many months when suddenly one day I just started jonesing for a smoke bad, so I had one. That happened for 1-1.5 years, once I left home one of the first things I did was start smoking. Tried quitting more times than I can remember, eventually the "need" for one just drives me insane and I'm right back at it.

Don't start! I know many people don't have issues with quitting, but I consider them lucky in that. Truth is you won't know whether quitting is easy or difficult, so trying it is a huge gamble not worth taking.

I started when I joined the army in 1985. In basic training, the drill sergeants actually made it sound like it was a privilege to take a smoke break. "Smoke if you got 'em!" Everybody ran to the designated area for a break. Annything to get out of some extra yelling or push ups.

When I got to my permament duty station, you could smoke anywhere you wanted then, and ash trays and buckets were everywhere. Cigs were cheap on base (no taxes and cheaper prices). It was easy to smoke in the army, and if I had to take a guess, more than half of the people I was around smoked. I guess in 1988, the armed forces started to crack down on smoking.

Not necessarily. I smoked in a similar fashion for 5 years through the end of high school and college, and woke up one day and decided to quit. Have had two cigarettes since (4 years since I quit), both when I was falldown drunk. I've never once had a craving.

Some people can do it, some can't. For some reason nicotine never really got me addicted. Caffeine, though? Forget it. If I don't have coffee/Coke/Dr. Pepper by 8am, I'm a disaster.

I started because my best friend who was 2 years older smoked. He smoked because his older brother did.
It looked cool. It was the cool thing to do.
The folly of youth.

I kept smoking because of the image in high school. That whole bad boy rebel image. ****** stupid I know.

I continue because i am ADDICTED. More to the point, I havent the willpower right now to quit.
I've gave up alot of addictions in my life. We all have our vices. Cigarettes are mines. I'll quit some day. I've quit before, for about 4 months, but started again (Long time ago) so I know I CAN quit, its just a matter of being mentally prepared to quit.

I was held hostage in a lab while evil lab technicians hooked me up by wires to some machines and forced to smoke non-stop until one of my lungs collapsed. I continue to smoke because I found the experience enjoyable.

When I smoke cigerattes (maybe smoked three in my entire life) I get a quick buzz, about two minutes, and then get nausea and cold sweat. Very uncomfortable. The seering pain in the throat doesn't help much, either.

I can't believe so many people smoke, i mean, it's just awful in pretty much every aspect. They cost a lot of cash too, adds up pretty quickly. I've always wanted to be a smoker though, don't know why, but i love the smell of smoke. I think i'd become addicted if i started smoking and that's not something i want to do. Maybe i'll try and be the occasional cigar smoker...or is it a bad idea to start smoking cigars before cigarettes?

I shouldn't even be interested...i know i'd be addicted to em in a heartbeat.
