Those who own a laptop, what do you use it for?

Web design, programming, etc? What do you use it for? Do you ever take it to class and use it to type out notes? If so, do you ever bother anyone by doing that?

I take my to school with me because I live off campus and end up staying on campus in 12 hours shifts. When I have breaks I do my homework on it. I never use it to take notes in class but I doubt I'd bother anyone by doing that.

web design and simple music editing (track cuts, simple tasks not needed for superior sound). its handy to have around when inspiration strikes.

As a consultant, make use of a DTR, and thus a majority of my work takes place on such - financial modeling, OLAP/ROLAP/MOLAP development and testing in a client's office, database/datawarehouse/datamining, etc.

Lots of crunching.

I use mine around myhouse. Such as at the dinner table, watching TV, taking a poo etc... I have a wireless connecttion so i can get internet from anywhere in my house🙂

School work mostly. I take it on-campus with me in the morning and can then stop by my office, the library, study lounges, wherever, and get some work done. Wireless access all over campus really helps too.

I thought I would just waste time bringing it to class at first, but not having to go find a computer to use or head back home really helps. Of course it also helps that as a computer engineer, almost all my work is on computers.

pr0n.

ok seriously (wait, that is serious), i live pretty far off campus and need to be able to do homework between classes. i'm constantly running around and spend very little down time at home so i need to be able to take my computer with me. but the real reason i bought it was to do audio recording and stuff at my band's practice studio without needing two seperate computers. my laptop's pretty quick for that stuff (3.2 GHz P4, 1GB DC DDR400, 7200RPM/8MB HD), but the tradeoff is it's soooooooooo heavy and the battery life is pretty shabby.

Well for the past few months, it's been my primary system. Since I graduated and have been living at home, I've been using my desktop sparingly since it makes my bedroom unbearably hot. When I was at school (and when I move out into my own place), I used it for most of my schoolwork. I did all the work on the laptop so I could take it to campus with me and have all my work with me in the library between or after classes. I also used it a lot for just relaxing on the couch using my rooommate's wireless. Over the summer, most of my gaming has been console-based (although I have been playing Half-Life which I've done on my laptop since it's perfectly capable of running it) so I haven't really had need for the desktop outside of burning CDs and file storage.

I have 2: One provided by my work (an IBM R40 with killer battery life) and mine (an HP 700mhz ultra thin notebook).

The work one I use to take my work home, be able to VPN into the office in an emergency or so I can get credit for working from home instead of going into the office 😉. I also use it so I can sit on the patio and smoke and nef. 😛

My personal one I bought cheap for similar reasons, minus the VPN. Now that I have the lappy from work my son uses it to go to friend's houses and such.

I use mine for work, on site computer repair, to back up peoples stuff & print out invoices. For a great map solution, havent been lost in years 🙂 For wardriving, use to do this a lot but now its so damn easy its no fun.

I use mine for work... As it is issued to me by work. I give presentations on a regular basis, so I don't install games and other assorted crap. It's against policy anyway.... Policy I helped write. 🙂

So I get a free lappy that's reliable because I use it for productivity and nothing personal.
