I live about 10 minutes from downtown Cleveland.

Say what you will about it, but downtown Cleveland is an interesting place to take pics. Lots of old architecture along with some more modern structures.

I would like to head into town and take some night shots, but there is just a part of me that is hesitant to go by myself:(

I've really never felt that way before as I've worked downtown many times and have worked often through the night on different jobs. I guess its just walking around with my gear...it just seems to put a target on you.

Anyways, I was wondering what your thoughts were on this...

Thanks

Depends on how late at night and what part of town. I feel that having your photography gear on you does make you an inviting target, especially if you're alone. If it's 9:00 or 10:00 at night in a busy area, then it's not that big of a deal. If it's your intention to get night photos without many people around getting in the way, I'd suggest going in the morning a little before dawn. Not many people around then and the ones who are are more likely to be on their way to work or home from work than out looking for trouble. It's always safer to have someone else with you though to keep a watch for potential problems while you're focusing on setting up your shots.

Well I did venture out tonight. I was downtown around 3:30 or so...of course it started to rain. I drove around a bit and waited it out. Quite a few people still out at the after hour joints...around 4:30 it was fairly quite.

Anyways, I did get a few pics off. I kindda like this one: http://farm2.static.flickr.com...10871_fe612a1617_b.jpg

It was my first time out @ night...so be gentle;)

Anyways, I drove past the house from the movie A Christmas Story...http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/d...rth/Jul152007_1294.JPG :)

10871 is excellent.
How long was the exposure and what was the lens used?

Awesome shots! I think that the clouds really add to the picture. How did you get all of the lights to be "stars"? did you use a filter or is that natural?

I have driven into DC before to get some night shots of the monuments. I have had few problems, but 10pm on a summer weekend night its still rather crowded.

lamps do that star thing naturally on longer exposures, filters put stars on everything and well it looks like ass

I live a minute from Pasadena and about 10 minutes from Downtown LA. I've never gone to LA for the sole purpose of a photo run but I have taken some great pics of the skyline from surrounding areas (in fact, just last week, I took some from Dodger Stadium). They're on another drive, I'll have to find it and upload those.

I run around the city at night every few weeks to shoot. Haven't really run into any problems other than it being really cold.

Yes I do go shooting late at night, and I also have my gear insured against theft.

I think you had a good picture going. Personally, I think you waited too long. I think about 20 minutes earlier and you could have gotten the sunrise effect while leaving the sky a darker blue while getting a better light effect from the buildings.

I could be very wrong though, if anyone else would chime in with their opinions.
