Citizen Kane

Someday You'll have to tell me why this is considered "the greatest movie ever made" by the critics? I'll probably never understand but it's worth a shot.:p
Actually, there are too many reasons to list here. :D

I think André Bazin best summed up Citizen Kane as "a discourse on method". Orson Welles, a classic auteur, along with Gregg Toland and Herman Mankiewisz literally created a masterpiece of formalism by the seat of their pants.

Most of the images are tightly framed in closed form. Crane shots used by Welles, given the technology of the era, haven't been as spectacularly employed since, in my opinion. In fact, the film is rather brazen in its technical audacity. Toland employed a number of innovative gimmicks to render so many dramatically compelling effects.

Adding to the nearly incomparable cinematography, the plot outline came off to many as so revolutionary. The use of newsreels and flashbacks illustrating concepts in an intricate, jigsaw-puzzle structure that doesn't exactly click until the final scene has been long considered a stroke of genius.

Finally, the outright attack on a living, "respected" public figure like William Randolph Hearst was unheard of at the time. This attack, by the way, came back to haunt Welles and RKO during the 1941 Academy Awards presentation. The film was nominated for 11 Oscars. However, because of Hollywood politics (read: Hearst), Mankiewisz was the only recipient of an award from the academy, as I recall.

I could go on for days about Citizen Kane. Totally awesome film. Many film schools and scholars still analyze the movie for the sheer creativity involved.

Well, *cough, cough*, back to politics. :D

OrooOroo:

Yes, I know. Actually, almost all of the subjects on my wish list have been done, but none were flicks I enjoyed or they got such bad reviews I didn't bother watching. (I didn't know about Mitterand's film. I'll check it out.) The House of Mirth needs a very strong character for the complexities of Lily Bart. Madame Butterfly will not fly, for me, without a strong musical cast and a believable Cio Cio San. In Victor Victoria there is a scene in which Juli Andrews sobs over Un Bel Di and the soprano is quite good and believable.

Thanks for the help! :)
