Those on dial-up?

What about some people In rural areas will they
always have to remaian on dial-up or will something
else replace It?

DSL is becomming more common, but it's still not available for everybody. The limitation of distance from the switch serving the user's house is still a huge issue. To overcome that issue quickly requires a lot more infrastructure investment than most phone companies are willing to put up right now.

Cable? Ha ha ha! Right! If they haven't come your way with cable service yet, they never will unless the street/area undergoes some significant population growth.

I think the next hope aside from satellite is from cellular service. Right now you can get speeds on cellular that are only slightly better than 56K dial-up (144 Kbps peak, 50-80 Kbps average), but Verizon wireless, and surely others, are currently testing a wireless data service called 1xEV-DO that should peak at about 640Kbps, with the average speed being somewhat lower, albiet much better than dial-up. If you're already served by cellular service from Verizon, Alltel, US Cellular, Midwest Wireless, etc., there may be hope yet within the next several years.

There are many people who won't get the t.v. bundle
they just want the computer not the movies & they can't
get DSL In the country-unless something happens with wireless?:Q

maybe they'll make dial-up faster?
but I think any other route Is going to be expensive
to go the satelite route people..can get It If they
want to pay for it I😉 understand?

Dialup cannot be made faster w/o messing with the far end.

In an analog phone system, there is (effectively) a 7 bit DAC at the other end that has an 8kHz sampling rate that converts the voice to digital for multiplexing and sending all over the place. So there is no possible way to increase the speed over 56k w/o messing with the entire phone system.

You may qualify for isdn or idsl....

In many rural areas isdn is not metered (metered means you pay for each minute, usually a penny for 56k and 2 cents for 128k...they usually give you 200 hours, but even a penny a minute would be a hell of a bill for me).

ISDN is better at 56k than dialup is at 56k because it doesn't 'retrain' or 'spool' up or down...each click is 56/128k no matter what, whereas a modem is like 6k/12k/36k/56k etc.

Now if you aren't metered that's pretty good....it's not Cable or real DSL but a heck of a lot better than dialup.

If you are metered, there is a work around and it's legal, but the isp has to set it up. It's called Data over Voice. With ISDN there is '3 lines', 2 56k channels and 1 voice (which can carrying the full bandwidth).

Good luck, I was in a very expensive area in the suburbs and no DSL or Cable was offered and the phone lines were only capable of 28k max for some reason. We had a WISP that was over $100/month for 256k and they required drilling a hole directly in the wall and running the cable directly to a funky PCMCIA deal they installed....no break out box, no element protection for rain intrusion....etc....

If you're in the country, you dont need broadband!

If you're looking for entertainment, try tieing your pitchfork to your wagon and chase your pigs with it.

IDSL is $90-120/mo for 144/144 and usually has a sizable setup fee, it's DSL over ISDN. You can't use voice over it, but it's not metered. ISDN is almost always metered.

lol
or screw your sister

Wireless would be the way to go. We live in a small town, less then 1000 people and I am sure Verizon is in no hurry for dsl here. I could almost throw a rock to the switch though.

I just wonder how hard it would be to set up, We have a water tower thats higher then every thing else, could use that to put the antenna on. Anybody with any bright ideas? Could set it up a a co-op.

I live in a rural area and would kill to get broadband.

The only alternative is thru satellite and I have not heard that they have improved there latency issues for gaming.

Anybody hear otherwise let me know

That's what I do.

The nice thing about living in a rural area, is that if you carry a gun people don't assume you're out to commit a crime.

if by saying "better than dialup" you mean "costs 10x more than dialup" then yes, it is better

Ahahaha....hehe....Oh thanks for that laugh that was funny, I had 2way sat connection for 3 months then dropped it
because of my pings any from 1500 to 2800ms all this blazing speed for 70 a month I ended up ebaying all my equipment for 300.00 loss and went and bought a 19.00 modem and get 150 to 230ms pings for only 10 a month.
