Our twins at week 30 wanted to come out. Apparently there's a 50% chance of pre-term labor for twins and much higher for triplets. Worse yet we had identicals so we were at risk for TTTS (one takes the other's nourishment from the placenta) which is fatal for both in 25% of identicals. That's a large risk percentage given all that she was about to go through... At week 30, that would've been very bad to deliver. My wife was admitted to the hospital where her OB-GYN scared the crap out of us by telling us what it would be like if they had been born at that time - numerous respiratory and mental development problems. She put her on magnesium sulfate and gave steroids to help speed the babies' respiratory systems. Her contractions were only 5 minutes apart but after day 1 being on the mag, they finally slowed to 20 mins apart. She stayed for a few days and ordered for strict bedrest for the rest of her pregnancy and given a machine to control dosage of her meds to ward off the contractions... guess who had to play nurse 24/7? I was on bed-pan duty and everything for 6 weeks - she was only allowed to get up to shower and take a crap... I actually bathed her in the tub while she lay sideways - it was that serious that she wasn't allowed to put any pressure on her cervix. I even wheeled her with a computer chair from bed to bathroom. Lucky I work from home or I would've had to blow my vacation days and then some. Somewhere around week 33 we had another scare so another trip to the hospital and a week stay... where I actually worked by her bedside. They have a whole wing for pre-term labors... it was quite eye-opening.
Anyway, she gave birth at 36 weeks - they suggested minimum 34 so we were good. She thought she felt her water break at 10pm but it wasn't for sure... we found out at the hospital that indeed it was the night to deliver and at that moment it finally hit me after so many months. She took the epidural and was glad she did even though she pushed for 2.5 hrs before the 1st one finally popped his head out. His brother would follow only 5 mins later. Just over 5lbs and the other just under. They were minutes away from deciding go C-section and that made her push that much harder and finally delivered. Most twins come C-section so we were lucky. C-sections also mean you can't have more than 3 pregnancies... not that we were planning to. When they first came out, neither cried right away - eventually they tried to cry but it sounded more like choking. They were also very "sleepy" and were whisked away to the NICU within minutes. My wife never even saw twin B in the delivery room. A few days later they would be good to go and they're very much normal right now at 9 months. Anyway, this whole process makes me feel for those who have troubled pregnancies. Don't take your kids for granted.
