Only way would be to use the bank machine. Checks can be done online with certain banks.

find a local branch for a checking account? after that, hook it up with something like ING as a hub.

Yep which will either cost you a fee or if your lucky they have one close. Though a lot of different banks you can get aren't always in your area so then your out of luck.

What do you think they did before the internet? If they couldn't take them in person they mailed them.

I personally maintain a checking account with a local branch of a national bank; that way I can just drive by on my way to/from work, and make a deposit if necessary. Then I can just do an EFT to put it in whichever account I want it to end up in.
