Those of you who pull 60, 80 hour weeks, how do you do it?

What motivates you to do this? Is it just the money? Even if it is the money, how do you keep yourself going without just becoming burned out? I mean, your body doesn't know what money is, it just knows come 7 PM after being at work 12 hours earlier, it's probably tired. How do you overcome that? Does your body go into some sort of stress-handling mode or something?

I don't know how people do it. During the summer, my friend will take to working about 75 hours a week between various jobs to sock money away. I just don't know how he does it. It has to wreck major havoc with your body I would think.

Me, I just work so I can pay the bills and be happy.

When I was a field tech I did 80hr weeks and got paid for 40.

Now that I'm in the office, I work 2hr weeks and get paid for 40.

This is the first morning I've been able to relax at home in 9 days. In to work at 5 am, leave for home at 9-10pm and repeat. Some do it for short bursts (a month or so) when big projects come up.

One summer, when I was in college, I averaged 100-130 hours per week for the entire summer. It sucked, I don't remember much of that summer but paydays ROCKED.

Depends, but if I've got a clear idea of what to do in my head and feel like I'm making progress, it's pretty natural. Longest I've ever worked straight through was four days and that was pretty tough, but it had to be done. High levels of chaos and crisis can keep you awake; that four-day session required a lot of activity and a lot of moving around, and that's a lot easier than staying up for several days working in front of a desk.

I had a really enjoyable period of about six weeks when I'd dropped down to about 45-90 minutes of sleep per night. One of the remarkable things about that was that I'd just lie down (I didn't change clothes or anything) and it would feel like I'd just blinked, but it would be an hour later, and I'd get up and get back to work. Because I had no sensation of sleeping or of time haveing passed when I'd been lying down, it felt like a single unbroken "day" six weeks long. We're so used to having our lives divided up into days and weeks and our routines that depend on the clock and it was a very interesting experience not to have those divisions.

im trying to finish a project here at work. Im at 82 hours right now and I'll be over 100 by the end of tomorrow. Im dead and I cant wait to get this thing done.... now if the damn servers would just cooperate, it would make my life a lot easier!

Thank god I still get paid hourly.....

I did over 65 hours last week and didn't even realize until I did my status report. I was 165% allocated last week in the project plan. Whoo hoo! I have no problem doing the extra hours. What I do find is that I have no time for yard work, playing games, or reading ATOT.

I've done it, but only for a few weeks at a time.

Eating healthy, taking vitamins and taking power naps really helps.

I get up...i go to work...i come home i eat and then sleep.
On the days i have the kids, I dont work as many hours, the days it is just me, I have nothing else to really do i guess.....

I work about 70 hours every week. I often work at least one day on the weekend. I hate it but I'm just out of college and I don't have a lot of job experience. I'm just trying to hang in there for about a year until I can find something better.

That's the most horrific thing I've ever heard. What was it like once it was over? Do you think it's done any long term damage?

I ended up quitting a salary job once after I put in like week 12 of 52-54 hours. I felt I had no life even with those hours. Lots of 7am till 10pm days.

I could not imagine staying with a job for years that was more than 40 hours. Call me lazy, but I like time for me and my family just to chill. . .

I just did it. I'm greedy and I want to be financially stable.

Now I can do that while working 40hr/weeks. All of the overtime taught me a lot about work, work ethics, and money.

I work for a major forest products corporation. I'm a process engineer. My degree is in Industrial Engineering. I basically make sure everything in 3 different mills on the plant is running right and I work on projects on the side. Its not a lot of fun, but I don't plan on doing it forever. I'm thinking about trying to find a job in offshore work. I heard there's a lot of money in that.

I haven't done it in awhile, but when I did, I lived like sh!t.

basically, I came home, ate the first availible thing (usually something unhealthy that could be cooked in the microwave in under 3 minutes), and went to sleep. laundry piled up, and I didn't really have the energy to cook or clean.

I've done it a couple times. It helps if the people you work with are friends and understanding of the fact that working that much makes you cranky as hell. The only times I've ever done it were when I was either behind on bills or there was something I absolutely needed to buy, and once for my anniversary with my now Ex because I wanted to do something really special.
