Any reason XP Home is not good enough to take advantage of the school network and all ? Just got a new Dell and am trying to convince someone not to blow it away in favor of XP Pro. Not worth the hassle IMO.

They're not administrating the school network, are they? If not, they have no need for Pro.

Yeah wtf? There's absolutely no reason XP Home can't utilize all your campus network resources.

Networking capabilities. Obviously the HOME edition is more limited in some way. People run servers, etc. from there... LAN server gaming, etc.

The point is I don't want to be the helpdesk he calls because he fvcks up the wipe/install. I'm saying leave it well enough alone as XP home, even though he's going away for school soon.

EDIT>>> I just found this which should support my case. Am I missing anything other than perhaps some schools require XP Pro ?

Just for info gathering's sake... how do those recovery disks work - the ones that come with new Dell PCs ? Can I just as well wipe the entire C: and the recovery can still work at a later point via CDROM boot ? Is it that simple ?

i haven't owned a dell.. but the recovery disc on my sager notebook is probably the same.

you put the disc in, restart the pc and it boots to the disc, formats the hdd and installs windows + whatever programs came oem on it. depends on how the recovery disc is setup, for a dell on xp pro i assume it would be a clean install of xp with some random dell tools on it or something.

definatly nice for people that don't know all that much about pc's.

Yeah, that's basically it. It restores the computer to the factory produced state.

And what's this about some schools now allowing XP Pro? I know I'm using XP Pro in my dorm, just wondernig what the history there is ..

No, apparently windows xp Pro is "Recommended" here. I don't think you'll need pro's abilties. What, multiple domans and such?

Uh - you almost HAVE to have XP Pro if you're in a dorm using their resources.

XP Home does not allow authentication to a server which is needed for most campuses.

Read the FAQ on the differences between XP Home and XP Pro. You should be able to use that and a list of services on the network to determine what is necessary. Or you could call the school and find out if they recommend XP Pro and if so, why.

This is not true. Home will not allow you to join a domain (not needed to authenticate to a server). However, Home will not cache those credentials so you must reenter them each time you reconnect.
