those of you that have had wisdom teeth removed

I had my wisdom teeth extracted Thursday afternoon. The information sheet they provided stated it should only be bleeding for about 2 hours after the surgery, but that it could vary because everyone is different.

Well, apparently I am different because it has been bleeding now for about 12 hours. By bleeding I mean I am changing gauze in my mouth every 30 minutes and there is still a fair amount of blood showing up on the gauze.

Obviously I will be calling the dentist ASAP in the morning to make sure this is ok, but I was wondering if anyone here has had this same experience, and do you have any tips/tricks to alleviate the bleeding?

Depends on how the wisdom teeth are situated. My bottom teeth were covered by a layer of gum which needed to be cut off, so there was a lot more open tissue. I bled for at least 10-12 hours, if not a full day. Recovery also took like 2-3 weeks.

that sounds kinda similiar to what the surgeon told me. Two were erupted and one was impacted. They had to use two stitches.

does it hurt ? I was thinking of getting mine removed...

to be honest with you it doesn't hardly hurt at all. The operation was much less painless than what I had imagined and what everyone else told me.

Rinse mouth with warm salt water constantly. 2 sounds about right, I had blood and drool coming outta the corner of my mouth the 1st hour.

A little over a day. I had them removed by an oral surgeon when they were still buds so it was painless and I was done with milkshakes after about three days.

My operations was a little painful, I was given novocaine and nitrous oxide but I didn't use much nitrous (you breathe through the nose for NO2 and through the mouth for normal air) and they kept missing my nerves with the novocaine shots. They started off giving me about 4-5 shots on each side, those didn't work well so they had to do about 2 or 3 more on each side. After the anesthesia took, it was still unpleasant but not really painful. They sawed the tooth into a few pieces then twisted it out with pliers. It felt really odd when they twisted it, like your whole jaw line is turning almost. It's the weird sensation you get when you twist out a baby tooth but amplified since it's much larger.

After treatment remember to do salt water rinses and flush it with the water syringe, or food will get caught there and you'll get an infection. I know a couple of people who had pretty bad infections and fevers after the surgery because of this.

It bled for less than a day, IIRC. Of course, I was paranoid and didn't eat solid food for days. Never got dry sockets and the only painkillers I took was one dose of advil on day one. 😀

I was at the dentist on Wednesday and he wanted to take out my upper wisdom teeth, then again he has been saying that for the past 5 years! Dunno, just don't like the sound of it, and after what i have read here, it's put me off further. I did ask why, and he said it's not worth filling them so might as well as remove them!

i stopped flowing after an hour or so. i kept bleeding for the rest of the day though
i healed up pretty quickly

2 hours?

I could only wish.

I was bleeding for more like almost a day.

God, it's pure hell for the first few days.

But it gets better 🙂

If I remember correctly from boot camp, people were given the same number of days for bedrest as they had teeth taken out. One day bedrest (and bleeding, drooling blood on their pillows) for one tooth, two days for two teeth, etc. Those with four teeth pulled, really did bleed for the full four days. It was odd to me how it was so predictable and linear.

A pulled wisdom tooth can easily bleed to for two or three days and it seems like it will never stop but it will stop. Do not worry. Your situation appears normal.

One wisdom tooth of mine bled for three hours, like someone mentioned above. Another wisdom tooth bled strongly for two days, continuing through a third day.

Eh, I think I was bleeding for 3 hours or so. It really isn't too bad of a procedure... you walk in and next thing you know you're done. Make sure you get home and you have your Vicodin in hand before the Novocaine wears off and you're golden.

Mine was for almost a day.

However, I had a horrible experience. The doctor had to put me under to remove them since they were still under the gum. But I guess they misjudged how much of the anesthesia I required. So about mid-procedure I wake up and in my semi-conscious state I tried to push them off of me. Well they had some kind of the surgical instrument in my mouth and a needle in my cheek. So I had lots of extra pain and one of my cheeks swelled up to about the size of half a baseball.

I think a few days for me. It gets less and less by the day but have fun sleeping through the night when it's bleeding. You'll wake up with awful taste in your mouth.

I'd guess mine bled a bit for 24 hours. I had an impacted wisdom tooth though. Two years later and there is still a good sized hole in my gums.

I had all 4 removed at the same time. 2 days later I ran a 5k. Not a smart idea.

I was puking blood after that because all the pounding from running opened things back up and I swallowed a bit more blood than I thought.
Still ran a decent time of under 25 minutes. I was impressed with myself (and beyond fucking miserable!!!!!!!).

I was given shots of Novocaine and was awake for my whole procedure. It wasn't too bad. Just a lot of pressure and cracking of teeth. Don't really remember it bleeding that much. I'm kind of a freak like that though. I also was able to be awake while a bb was removed from my arm. I could see the doctor using tweezers to move my muscles around while he searched for it. Good stuff.
