those of us in our 20's, who is the quintessential artist (musical) of our era?

Been warning of this for years. The last decade has saw music going from "people that play instruments and sing" to "guy in a suit writes lyrics that market research shows 14-25 age range likes, find a face that fits a gimmick, and if the person can not sing use autotune to make it sound like they can."

My era has bands like led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Metallica, Queen, and Van Halen. Your gen has Britney Spears, Justin Beiber, Jonas Brothers, The Black Eyed Peas, Kid Rock, and a zillion other terrible stereotypical corporate music makers.

The 2000's had it's chance. There were good people out there, and they were ignored. The White Stripes, Velvet Revolver, Wolfmother, Muse, Jet, The Strokes...all were awesome artists that made fantastic albums, and they mostly got raves from the music community, but no popular votes. They could have been this generation's Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and EVH, but synthesized drum tracks with clips taken from 30 year old songs mixed with bad rhyming took precedence. It could have been much different.

This is all you damn kids' fault! ::shakes cane::

On somewhat of a related note, my girlfriend is a DJ and she says weddings aren't much fun to do anymore. Ten years ago it used to be people wanted a large variety of music spanning several decades that everyone loved and was just fun to get out and dance to. Now she says that whole part of the reception lasts an hour or two, and then the bride and groom and all the other drunk wedding party fools just want shitty new dance music and rap.

It is hard to compare eras. These days there is just so much out there that the greatest bands aren't necessarily the most popular.

I think The Strokes have been pushed by the media as this generations Rolling Stones or whatever, but I don't think the sales were ever there to back it up. The music, while good, wasn't either.

Taylor Swift would have gotten 2010 as well if her album didn't come out in October

taylor swift is shit. she couldn't hit the right key in a live performance if her life depended on it.
i was actually embarrassed for her when she sang during the grammy's.

I'm 29 and I'd say Nirvana. I wasn't a big fan, but their impact on the music industry was huge. Metallica was pretty big, but not in the same influential way. There was a lot of great hip hop during that time too, and rap evolved quite a bit, but again, I don't think any group in any genre had as big an impact as Nirvana did.

If I was 20-25 I'd probably same Gaga or Kanye...

Alicia Keys, her 1st 3 albums are incredible, her latest isn't as good but it's still pretty decent. And her actual musical abilities make her the real deal, not some thrown together studio bubblegum pop bullshit wanna be artist. I would also say Eminem, his latest is pretty deep and his old shit's just hilarious.

Mariah Carey should be mentioned, she had the biggest selling album about 7 years ago, and overall only 1 artist ever has sold more records than her. And I believe a few years ago she took the all time #1 singles spot over.
