Those fan dampener mount things

Those things that sit around the edge of the fan between it and the case? You can get them for power supplies too. Basically, I have a question regarding the use of those.

How tight would one screw the screws? I've got a few of these dampeners, and I was thinking the other day, as I've tightened the screws quite tight, the mounts are squashed very thin, I spose it's the same with those silicon washer mount things too, so surely it's not as effective?

Would it be better to actually have the fans/power supply mounted a bit looser, so that the silicon isn't heavily compressed, and thus is more able to absorb the vibrations?

I just read a case build review (yep, it was the ARM kit review on SPCR) that showed that the silicone fan gaskets don't work as well as the rubber pins (screw replacements). But the rubber pins do leave a small gap between the metal and the fan that may cause whistling. So depending on your system, you may have to find a way to block the gap.

That kinda thing. Just to clarify 🙂

Thanks for the replies. In all fairness, I'm fairly sure that any difference between relative squashedness of the silicon will be completely undetectable to my mere human ear, but still, I was just curious.

Yes, those.

To make a short story even shorter; don't waste yout time / money.

Thanks, I hav such troube with long stories! 😉 😀

Some of the problem is that you normally would use a screw with those gaskets. So if the screw contacts the case metal at all, then the vibes will be transmitted to the case anyway. So you may have to drill out the fan mounting holes in the case a bit to avoid that as well as isolating the screw head with one or more silicone washers. Much more complicated than just using the rubber, silicone or elastomer (EAR) mounting pins that are available.

What you want for your case fans are these.

Agreed. I have a full set of those isolators (PSU, fan, etc.) and they don't do squat. Those Isolator "pins" are the shiznit, though!
