Those familiar with Washington DC attractions...

While on the DC metro (from Union Station) headed to Basilica of National Shrine & Franciscan Monastery, then started noticing all the graffiti, barbed wire, broken windows, etc. Needless to say, fear settled in & took the metro the other way. My question is: Is it safe to take the metro to the Brookland-CUA stop, then walking to the above mentioned places? Or would it be better to drive to those places?

Oh yeah, is the National Museum of Health & Medicine at the Walt Reed Army Med Center worth seeing?

I haven't been to Walter Reed in about 15 years, so they may have completely changed the nature of the exhibits, but the last time I was there, they had some of the most fvcked up medical weirdness you could imagine.

There used to be an underground band in DC called 9353 - the story around their name was that it was the serial number from an exhibit that one of them stole from Walter Reed. Some two-headed fetus or something. Probably BS, but a good story nonetheless.

you can take the metro to the national shrine. i have. but i as well was scared for my life. it's a shame how bad that area is.

do you have anyone to travel with?

parking there is possible though, if that's an option. might be worth a couple bucks.

I'm not sure how to reply directly (in order words, quote your responses)...so:

sward666- what you said about Walt Reed exhibits being "some of the most fvcked up medical weirdness"---that's kinda why I want to check it out--call it curiousity

sohcrates--yeah, i'll be travelling with someone but having taken the metro all over DC the day before, then coming across a scary area threw me for a loop. just wanted reassurance that taking the metro & walking to those 2 attractions was safe. by the way, how far is the walk from the Brookland-CUA stop?
