so i bought a thorton 2400 and figured it'd work fine.

i had a asus a7n266-vm rev 1.05 with newest bios, and all it would do is run at 800mhz.

i cant for the life of me make it work.

so i took it out and decided i'd put it in my brothers nforce2 and just use his xp1800 for the system with the a7n266-vm. so i put it in my brothers and it is detected as a mobile athlon 2400

his board is a chaintech 7nil1. nforce2 ultra 400. i figure it'll support it , and i have the newest bios installed. can anyone help?

Well, they don't make mobile Thortons, so it sounds to me like something might be wrong with the chip. How much level 2 cache does it say the chip has? Also, most older motherboards require a bios update, before they will accept a newer chip, like a Thorton or a Barton. I would try updating the bios for the older board, and see what happens.

well ti was different on both boards, one said 256k , the other said 512k

both boards had their latest bioses.

the chaintech ran a barton fine and a tbred b even.

I've personally set up three A7N266-VM/AA's with Thornton 2400+'s, and they do need a BIOS update before they run the CPU at the correct multiplier, but BIOS version 1007 got them properly recognized for me. Could this be a jumper issue? Remember that the bus and memory speeds are selected by those jumpers near the rear end of the AGP slot. For 133MHz on both CPU and RAM, you'd want the jumper caps on the left two pins of the top row, and the left two pins of the bottom row too.

I just got a Thorton thru a recent deal on the FS/Trade Forums, and though it was a great deal, and will overclock, pretty dissapointing over-all compared to most 1700+ T-bred B's I've had. Plus it is multi-locked.

Also what is the default vcore on a Thorton? this one runs about 1.525+v when set to default, yet my T-Bred B will read 1.5v when set to default.

 <--- me

Considering it still acts wacky (thinks it's a mobile CPU), do you think it might be a dud CPU?

i dunno, i contacted the original seller and he said he ran it fine at 2400.

i will look into this more. i mean it seems to run everything well, maybe the multipliers are messed up

Maybe the chip has been modded, trying to enable the extra cache - and they screwed it up?

the original seller says he did not mod it, but well i cant figure out why it would act all wacky.

i am going to return it hopefully.

I don't think it was the Thortons that were moddable, only early Barton cored T-breds (or should I say late T-breds with Barton cores?). Could be wrong, but that is what i've read. Either way, they have to have the "long" Barton core on them. My Thorton 1700+ does not :(

Maybe there is some conductive paint left-overs in one of the lazer cuts? Is it Mutipler locked? And for grins, I would try some different multi's.

No, it's the Thortons that can be modded, to allow the use of the extra 256k of cache that's on them, because they are actually Barton cores, with half of the level 2 cache disabled. I'm pretty sure that psada's right, I think he screwed the chip up, so he sold it. And, since it's multiplier locked, it can't be a mobile chip, they aren't multi locked. Besides, like I said in my first post, they've never made a mobile Thorton. You should try to get your money back, but good luck with that, man! That's exactly the reason I would never buy any used computer part.
