Thoroughbred - NF2 Question

My son's friend has a 4 year old Gigabyte 7VAXP VIA mobo that went bye bye.
He tells me he has a 2000+XP socket A TBred with 333 bus
If he bought an NF2 ultra board can he run the 333 (166.7) CPU on these boards?
I see in the bios shots, the FSB starts at 200, so can he run asynch - 333 CPU and (200 X 2) PC3200 RAM?

Boards with the newer nForce2 Ultra chipset officially supported 200 MHz (DDR 400) fsb. I know that some models would allow you to use a wide variety of bus speeds, including 266, 333, and 400. The favorites of overclockers were the Abit NF7 and NF7-S. These allowed setting fsb by 1MHz increments, and offered plenty of cpu/memory dividers. I can't remember if the AGP stayed in spec or not, when using non-standard settings.

Any nForce2 board will run a 333 MHz bus cpu at its default bus speed, and you get better memory performance when running the fsb and memory in synch, as opposed to running the memory at 400 MHz while the cpu is running at 333 MHz.

O.K. Thanks
All the ultras start FSB at 200 for RAM, so I guess theres a setting to run CPU and RAM in synch - too lazy to download manual. I'll tell him go for it (and change my phone number)

That sounds like a smart plan, especially if he's not old enough, or interested enough, to read the manual carefully. I would tell him that you refuse to help him replace the BIOS chip if he gets too adventurous. It's actually an easy setting to change, or at least it was on the Abit and Epox boards I tried.

Normally, I never tell anyone I know anything about computers, but my sn gave me away - litle rascal. No ice cream for a week. lol

Yes, it will work.

However, based on the experience of friends with Athlon XPs and fast RAM, I would recommend against running the RAM asynchronously. It actually damages performance. Running it as PC2700 may not sound as fun, but it's the way to go.
