Saw this bit in the nForce motherboard roundup:

"Therefore, all you have to do is install your multiplier-locked Athlon XP CPU into your nForce2 motherboard and voila; you can adjust all the available multipliers to your heart's content. However, make sure you purchase the right type of Athlon XP; only Thoroughbred-B processors have this capability on nForce2 motherboards. You cannot change the multiplier of a locked Palomino or Thoroughbred-A processor in any of the six nForce2 motherboards being reviewed today."

Anyone know how to tell the diff. between A and B? I've got an Athlon XP 1600+ that was bought right around the time they were $100 (so they had been out for a while, but it was still a relatively long time ago).

Thanks for the link. Although reading that made me realize I don't even have a Tbred at all, but a Palomino. Damn :).

Yah, T-bred A's were available in the 2200+ for a while, but they ran hot and didn't offer much in the way of headroom. T-bred A's at lower clock speeds were available in the mobile and MP arenas, and finally came to the desktop in early November. T-bred B's started showing up in the form of 2400+ a little bit before that.....

Grumble. No wonder I cant get much out of my 2200+. Seems that according to the codes, I have a Tbird-A.

Ah well, who needs more than 1.8 GHz these days anyway. I'll just not overclock it and get a new chip in a year or so to replace it.

Drat, and I thought I did my homework beforehand. I suppose I could always do the wire trick to unlock its multipliers and see what FSB I can get. Nah, too much trouble for the time being.

Whee...
