Why is XP missing a thorough scandisk? Even norton disable thorough in diskdoctor 2002. I'm running FAT32.

Norton automatically installs a different set of utilities for XP than 98 or ME. That is why it has to be uninstalled and reinstalled if upgrading to XP.

That is because XP is designed for NTFS. Even when it is in FAT32, it has to be NTFS capable. So NSW is installed with different files that are now interchangeable after the installation.

XP uses CHKDSK from the Command Prompt. It does everything except surface scan.

If you are using FAT32, there is a work around. Use the ScanDisk.EXE file from 98 or ME, by running it up front by using an old 98 or ME Emergency Startup/Boot disk. IOW, just boot with the diskette and run SCANDISK from the command prompt.

Once you switch to NTFS, that option is out.

There isn't an easy way to convert to NTFS is there? I have ton and tons of data, and it would take a long time to backup

if you wanted to convert to ntfs, you should back up anyway. one wrong move, and data goes bye-bye, permanently.

To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt
Open Command Prompt.
In the command prompt window, type
convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs format.

Notes

To open command prompt, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command.
