Calculating from my points with 880 cores, it would take 8,000 for first place to do what it is doing. Thats a lot of CPU's !

Right now we are slowly gaining on 9th place. I don't know that we can catch them in 4 days, but 10th is nice.

Nice Mark, Please share some build info somewhere. I enjoy these builds taking somewhat obscure cpus and motherboards and making them all work together. I have read several times what you have gone through to get E.S. to run properly for what they are.

I was feeling great, relegating one amd 1700x to act as a room heater in my wife's office that now gets used much more as she is working remotely. Why not have a boinc box running 24/7 than a purpose built electric heater? Out of the deal I get a new Zen 3 build of some type. Trying to justify a 3950x, but probably could get by with only 12 new and strong cores for audio and video editing...

You inspired me to load Boinc on my newish 8 core phone to turn in a little team help.... Ain't no 64 cores though.

Okay, I turned on as many cores as I have access to and there should be 122 cores if I counted correctly. Peanuts compared to some of you other guys... ahem... Mark. I have another 8 I can add but I'm waiting till this weekend for the weather to cool down as it's been unusually warm.

I tried to fire up the old core 2 quad 9650 again, but it just clicks - don’t even get a beep. I’m guessing when the ups it was attached to burned out a month or so ago, it took the 12+ year old power supply with it. Guess I’ll just have to pickup another 4 pis to make up for it.

There really isn't much out there on that 7B12 CPU. But from what little I can find, it looks like a variant of the 7742 that Google has been using for their cloud computing service as there are several comments online from people showing that CPU in their VMs...

On a different topic, most of my climateprediction.net tasks errored out or were cancelled by the project so my 3900X is almost all in on WCG for the next few days. :)

24 hours ago we were 7.7 million behind Rechencraft for 9th place. Now we are 2.8 million behind them. That's a really nice gain! If it keeps up we'll pass them some time this afternoon. :)

8th place is out of reach unless someone has a massive bunker waiting for the end, but 9th isn't bad at all.

Down to one million to 9th. Our daily average is such that if we all bunkered like 5 days we could have had 8th. 9th will suit me fine.

o.k. For 9th I'm now overclocking instead of under volting and running beyond as stock frequencies... For most of my few cores, that are mostly 14nm ryzen worthless cpus... New ones are looking like great upgrades to me for a few years. Though I don't really need to upgrade anything for my own real real-world usage. It's all frivolous, unless you can all help with the nitrative!

These fan curves, really makes me remember why I like silent or mostly closed systems for the cases that have to be relatively within ear shot...

I now cut out all rear fan stock case fan grills for old school round wire fan grills. Reduces sound so much when the case is within 10 feet or so of my head or greater if the sound generators are opposite of the directional sound receivers....er ears... :)

If you find any 7002 series EPYC CPU's on ebay at a decent price, go for it. They are incredibly efficeint, and power conservative, and the the right HSF, very quiet. Thats why I am converting. (as money allows). Except I did order a 5950x, god knows when I will get it.

Well, we have 9th ! And we could get 8th in 3 days, but we don't quite have 3 days. Well, one can only hope.

My new EPYC box should be up before the 16th year challenge.

The overtake estimator of SG is even showing just 49 h until CNT.

But if CNT handle this one like their PrimeGrid sprints, they'll have bunkers left for the last day.

My big CPUs are all offline now, but I am switching my 4-core computers on now. A single-socket 22-core Xeon is currently down, perhaps with a dead GPU. Tomorrow morning, or perhaps already tonight, I will pull the watercooled GPUs out and try if I can make it run with a spare aircooled GPU.

Ryzens come close to EPYCs' power efficiency if configured in Eco mode. I suspect they are easy to cool quietly then too, because the hotspot temperatures should go down considerably in Eco mode too. (I don't have a Ryzen myself to say for sure.)

When I can get 64 2 ghz cores for 200 watts, its a winner. A 3900x does 142 watts for 12 cores/

I believe 3900X and 3950X have the same limits:
TDP = 105 W and PPT = 142 W at stock,
TDP = 65 W and PPT = 88 W in eco mode.
I presume PPT may be decreased manually even further. Take a 3950X with PPT turned down to 65 W or even 50 W, and switch off any nonessential devices on the mainboard, and there you go with an ultra efficient machine. The only drawback is that a 3950X based computer apparently requires a GPU, whereas an EPYC based computer does not. Actually, ASRock makes one or another AM4 mainboard with BMC too. But they are expensive.

(I chose EPYC over Ryzen myself, because I want many cores but few computers. And further, I want GPU-less computers. Even though, I currently have too many computers. And being in this predicament, I like it a lot that at least my newer computers have BMCs.)

PS, going by the Eco mode reviews which I saw on the web, the stock mode is mostly useless nonsense both for highly and for lowly threaded workloads, compared with Eco mode.

I don't run "stock" mode (TDP=105/PPT=142 on my 3950X).

Here's some data on TNGrid that I collected some time back.

CPU: 3950X
MB: Gigabyte aorus master x570
RAM: 64 GB DDR4-3200
PSU: Seasonic Prime TX850 titanium
VC: Radeon VII (idle power draw is 20 watts according to sensor output)
Power is measured in watts at the wall minus 20 watts for the video card
All threads (32) are running TN-Grid tasks

TDP (105 watts) and PPT (105 watts) set in bios
Power draw at the wall: 161 watts
Boinc benchmarks...double precision 7032.64 million ops/sec....integer 71863 million ops/sec
3.893 GHz clock speed <----the effect of instruction sets such as avx must be minimal...on SGS LLR tasks the clock was 3.5 GHz
5.65 Gflops/thread....180.8 Gflops/host....1.12 Gflops/watt
Average CPU time (40 tasks): 9,654.9 s (STDEV=78 s)
Average points per task: 136.8
PPD: 39,188.4
PPD/watt: 243.4

TDP (65 watts) and PPT (65 Watts)
Power draw at the wall: 116 watts
3.03 GHz clock speed
Boinc benchmarks...double precision 6339 million ops/sec....integer 63960 million ops/sec
5.65 Gflops/thread <-----I didn't do the calculations here since this number didn't change after I reran the benchmarks so it can't be accurate
Average CPU time (60 tasks): 12,795 s
Average points per task: 147 <----this # went up a bit so I wonder if this is because the Gflops/thread # didn't drop as expected.
PPD: 31,840.5
PPD/watt: 274.5

Summary on above data:

Numbers I think I can trust are task CPU time, clock speed, and power draw at the wall. The power draw at the wall number is contingent on the idle power draw number of the Radeon VII reported in the OS (20 watts).

So going from 65 watt PPT to 105 watt PPT:
Clock speed: 3.03 GHz --> 3.893 GNz is a 28.5% increase
Power draw: 116 watts ---> 161 watts is a 38.8% increase
TN-Grid task CPU time: 12,795 s ---> 9,655 s is a 25% decrease

At the rate we are going (75k and hour) we will get 8th place in 5.5 days, way too late. So 9th it is most likely.

An impressive run so far! We are new to this challenge series though, Mark, so forgive the few that have already moved on to the better known/higher prestige SETI Germany B-day challenge (bunker period). Personally I will stay with THOR until the final bell, which so happens to correspond nicely with a 7 day bunker for the SG challenge. I will be running African Rainfall with a 7 day deadline, so it works out perfectly for me, without the need to have so many different clients to manage.
