I am sure some of you know about the "supertrick" that can be found out about on kazaa lite's website.
Basicially it just means adding a bunch of
127.0.0.1 ads.crap.com to the windows hosts file in "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS"

I know in the past that editing C:\I386\hosts has no effect but entries in the other hosts file are usually reflected in internet explorer.

I have currently modified both files, if I ping ads.crap.com it resolves to 127.0.0.1 but the browser seems to keep resolving the domain.

The OS is XP Pro, I previously had a different install of XP Pro that was working.

Is there another setting I am overlooking?

You've done everything properly. Clear the cache/cookies, restart the browser, log out, reboot.

Go to start / run and type cmd. Then type "ipconfig /flushdns". Restart your browser and try again.

I cleared cokies and cache and flushed DNS a while ago. It has been about 1 1/2 weeks since I firsed did it. ipconfig /displaydns shows my hosts file entries and pinging them from the command prompt correctly resolves to 127.0.0.1. Its just browsing (ie or firebird) that still correctly resolves the URL's.

I have a proxy configured but that has never been a problem in the past, I have probably modified the hosts file in the same manner on 8 or 9 machines. It's just this image that does not like the concept for some reason. I am not sure why this system is different than the other, I ws wondering if there was a registry setting that might be in the way or something. It is probably just a windows bug.

"supertrick" is an option one can select when installing kazaa lite. It is suppost to block popups or something like that. But what it really does is change your hosts file to redirect you to certain websites of their choosing.

horhey, what do you mean by "redirect you to certain websites of their choosing"

It does not redirect you TO any website.

Here is an example from my hosts file.

127.0.0.1 ad.adsmart.net
127.0.0.1 ad.ca.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.de.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.es.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.fr.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.free6.com
127.0.0.1 ad.it.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.iwin.com
127.0.0.1 ad.jp.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.kr.doubleclick.net

So if a site has a banner or popup from "ad.ca.doubleclick.net" it won't bother wasting my bandwidth to download it. If I get a banner I check the source, add it to my hosts list and I never have to look at it again. Not a big diff on a cable modem maybe, but on a slow dialup it makes a large difference. This is also a good idea to prevent spyware from reporting home.

Like you have stated this will cut down on the responces to there sites and save bandwidth.
