SEATTLE — Is food an addiction? That’s the question one local woman is asking.

Naveena Shine is on a 100-day quest to avoid eating food. Shine is in the middle of an experiment that she thinks could change the world.

Eight surveillance cameras canvas Shine’s home, inside and out, recording her every move. Shine said the cameras keep her honest about staying away from food.

“I feel great,” Shine said Thursday. “You know what, there’s times where I go through, blah! There’s times where I think, should I stop this now?”

Shine’s pantry is bare and her cupboards are empty. She’s on a mission to find out if she can survive on only tea and sunlight. Shine believes food is an addiction.

“It’s like alcohol, once you start doing something you can’t get off it,” said Shine. “Especially now when they put all the addictions into the food to get you coming back for more, food is so addictive.”

But nutritionists say the practice of self-starvation is dangerous and has been deadly.

A Swiss woman in her fifties died last year after embarking on a reported ‘spiritual journey’ to give up food and water.

[/b]Shine now weighs 129 pounds, down 30 pounds since she quit eating. She says she’s not trying to starve or hurt herself.[/b]

Her refrigerator does have a ‘life line,’ just in case she feels the experiment has gone too far.

“The other day I bought some miso soup just in case I need to come off very, very quickly,” said Shine. “I wanted to have something here in case. It’s not opened yet.”

Shine said she is getting both encouragement and criticism from around the globe, and that’s what she wants.

She has asked to keep her location a secret so she doesn’t have a bunch of people showing up at her house, looking to see if she’s sneaking food.

Uh, I think she's confusing food and food additives. Undeniably, there's some really cruddy processed food out there. Its more likely she's going to end up on Pro-Ana websites as a role model. :(

Hm. People have done fasts like this before, but never because they thought food was an addiction. I think she's going to experience some serious repercussions from this, like permanently reduced bone density. I don't understand what drives people to do this. All living creatures eat or harvest energy somehow. We eat food. That's how we work. You can eat healthy or not... but you can't just not eat. I don't anticipate her finishing, just based on how the body responds, especially psychologically. Due to her age, she will lose much less weight than someone younger than her though.

Doesn't look like she has much fat to go off of. I believe she'll start puking after about 7 days due to low potassium and hopefully stop.

Many people, unfortunately, have involuntarily tried this experiment. Then they die of starvation.

Wow, so she is 50 days in already? I didn't even think this was possible. I couldn't imagine going almost 2 months without eating.

She is drinking a tea. I suppose you could load up that tea with various nutrient cocktails, but that's kinda defeating the purpose. She wants to avoid processed, artificial foods. And loading up a tea with artificially created, lab produced compounds seems like it take the weight from her 'experiment.'

It is true however that people eat much more than they need and most of them even that cheap junk food.
She probably wants to display that general eating habits are bad.

I am starving myself to death.

Life is an addiction which I don't want any part of.

Many try this to be like Buddha who was able to meditate under a tree and not eat for 49 days. Buddha was blessed and also a master of Samadhi, able to slow down his body processes to a near death state. His heart may have beat less than 1000 times in the 49 day span.

Every time i hear something of this sort it just leads to the feeling of a fish story. Not to denounce the attempts but unless someone has recorded these numbers its very hard to believe. For instance just from what you said regarding the heart beat, his heart would have beat less than once per hour on average of 49 days. ignoring the time it would take his heart to slow down as well as his brain stopping his smooth muscle organs..(not controllable through thought, ie. breathing, intestinal movement, venous return, etc.)

this lady will be hospitalized. hopefully they pay sharp attention to her physical condition. as well as her cognitive ability.

I can't imagine how much tea one would have to drink to survive this. I suppose a special tea could be concocted to meet some nutritional requirements to sustain you 100 days, but that cannot be pleasant.

Reminds me of an article I read about a guy who had a 30 day beer diet. He drank only beer for 30 days. Granted, it was a specially brewed beer with increased calories.
