:( I just picked up a crossover cable from Fry's as many of you suggest, and it still wouldn't let me transfer files between my 2 laptops. Anyone kind enough to provide step by step instruction? I am clueless now.

Tried FTP, it keeps asking me for server's name and password....I have no idea what those are :( Why do I need to provide server's name and password when I have the wired cable going through both machines?

Try turning off your firewall, I had this problem. But the only way was to turn off the firewall complelty.

Both are running Windows XP, both shows local connection at 100mps...I disable the wireless connection to avoid any potential conflict. So...what can I do now?

why didn't you just get a hub or a 4 port router ?
it shouldn't have been much more than the x-over cables.

connect the computers. Right click the folder and enabling sharing. On the other XP box, Look in My Network places in Windows explorer for the visible share or map a drive letter of the share by selecting tools, map drive \\COMPUTERNAME\SHARE NAME.
