The whole idea of cultural appropriation is insanely asinine, particularly since these Kooks Burrito folks actually gave credit to the Mexican abuelitas. I can see how appropriation without attribution is bad, and you want to give credit where credit is due....except the article pretty clearly states that somehow white folks can't "appropriate" a cuisine, even with attribution. It's stupid. The article treats tacos like intellectual property, as if someone willingly giving up information about their craft is somehow IP theft. This wasn't exactly corporate espionage, in fact it was flattery at worst. It's particularly stupid to care about this when these abuelitas will not be adversely at all by this Kooks joint in Portland making tacos. If Kooks had been successful, I would have certainly considered sending a check to them in Mexico, but to call this stealing is just stupid. These are not trade secrets, these sorts of things are all available in the public sphere.

Those complaining about cultural appropriations better not be attending the theater, symphony or, galleries. What total crap.

The concept of "Appropriation" as a negative term or idea is an assault striking down the very soul of America.

E pluribus unum

Be it artist or burrito maker, anyone wanting to shut them down is no American brother or sister of mine.

This a good example of the mental illness some of these people are displaying in public. It used to be people ignored the rantings of the mentally ill. Now we embrace it as policy. This type of thinking is divisive and ultimately bad for society. It further segregates us.

Yeah, it's insane, especially in regard to food. Pizza was invented in Italy some time in the 19th century. We brought it here after American servicemen enjoyed it while garrisoned there during WWII. Some of the servicemen opened pizza shops after the war and it exploded after that. Did they misappropriate pizza from the Italians? Of course not, because the Italians are white, right? Apparently cultural misappropriation really means racial misappropriation. We can borrow/steal cuisine from, say, the French, and likely no one will say a word, but not, say, the Mexicans or the Chinese. Hence, the term "cultural appropriation" is not really the phrase these idiots are looking for.

Hey, do they have burger shops down in Mexico? If so, they better shut those down pronto. Burgers were invented in Germany and popularized in the US. Only white people can make and sell burgers. We'll let non-whites eat them, but they can't make or sell them. Sounds fair! This is the logical conclusion of this kind of reasoning.

Total bs. When it comes to food, there is no such thing as cultural appropriations.

Or clothing. Or lifestyle. Or any other bullshit. We are a melting pot of culture, style, and artistry. God forbid someone use bits from one and others to create new/mixed ideas.

But nope, we gotta stop David from wearing a Halloween costume about Jose the drunk-mexican. That's where our BIGGEST problems lie in this c outnry.

Denying people the right to pursue happiness due to the accident of their birth is as illiberal and regressive as it gets.

And the true irony here is that the original burrito food cart in Portland is Shelly's Garden Honkin Huge Burritos at Pioneer Courthouse Square, and Shelly isn't Hispanic.
Both the Mercury and the Wweek have totally turned to shit.

This disease just seems to be spreading further and further into the minds of the country. "cultural appropriation" is complete and utter bullshit, and anyone who accuses someone of it (other than in jest) is a complete and total dumbass to be ridiculed.

So, if we see a black woman sporting straight blonde hair, can we persecute her for cultural / ethnic appropriation? Personally, I couldn't care less. Just wondering what the SJWs that infest this site think.
