Ok, so I'm supposed to be over at my friend's house, house sitting for her this weekend, and I stopped by my house on the way back from OAK to pick up the PS2 and some clothes for work tomorrow AM.
As I'm driving up Sunrise Blvd towards the American River, I notice a car pulled over on the right hand shoulder / bike lane and it appears to have flames inside the cab. I'm looking for someone outside, as there's no profile of anyone sitting upright in the seats, so I'm thinking it was parked and somehow is now becoming a roadside attraction. I reach for the cell and start to dial 911
Wrong.
As i pass slowly by, I see movement in the driver seat, dude had slumped over into the passenger side, and he's on fire.
I slam on the brakes, pull out of the left lane, grab the beach towel I was bringing and sprint back in time to see dude stumbling out of the car looking like a stunt guy doing the fire walk, only he's screaming and flopping like a fish.
Another guy runs up same time as I do and the two of us work on smothering the flames, which, are pretty hot and big at this time. Only they keep coming back.
Unknown to us at this time, dude had splashed gas on himself in an apparent suicide attempt. I heard one of the other cops tell the one who debriefed me "hey, it's a 902".
Another person comes up with a fire extinguisher and spray the guy, knocking the flames down on him, but the car is still going good. We're only about 30 feet away. So the three of us, get the beach towel under him and moved him back another 40 feet or so, and as we do the police show up. He has us move him behind his cruiser and move our cars out of the way as a couple of small explosions occur. One was the gas can he had inside, another was some fireworks he had.
EMT and FD show up, knock the fire down, and start with the burn gel and covers on him.
They take him away to the hospital, called CSI for forensics, I got a second degree burn on my right forearm, and a flat tire from taking the car hard up on the curb getting out of the way.
The cop who showed up first, helped me change the tire, thanking me the whole time and we both commented on how some people just drove by while we were still in crisis mode.
BTW, 911 was busy and I was on hold for a long time, I tossed my phone at this chick who showed and she was calmly giving them detail as the cop was advising dispatch, it took that long for them to answer.
Now, I'm andrenalized and have to get up at 6:00 to go back to work.
Gotta get that tire replaced , too, I'll bet.
