actually Wal-Mart does not make it own bread. It is made by one of the big bread companies. Look on the bread isle, whichever name brand/company has the most shelf space is also the name brand/copany that makes the Wal-Mart bread.
I worked for IBC/Merita for 15 year, where we made the Great Value bread. Not sure if IBC still makes it but it was a many multmillion dollar account. What Wal-Mart wanted, Wal mart got at my plant anyways.
There's a company making whole grain white bread now that I've been buying. I like it a lot, and the kids can't tell that I'm feeding them healthy stuff 🙂
The one thing I couldn't (and still can't) adjust to - is the American bread. It just plain sucks. Like eating paper, no less.
Luckily, there are more independent bakeries now who supply bread that is close enough to what I'm used to.
Yeah, most bread here is so processed it all feels like air and tastes the same. The only place to get good bread is at a real bakery or the better suppoermarkets (i.e. Whole Foods, Fairway, etc.).
