The documentary investigates gaming workshops in China that hire people to play online games like World of Warcraft and lineage. The gaming workers play at least 12 hours a day to produce in-game currency, equipments and whole characters, which are sold to American players.

6 minute video

I mean there are worse things that these people could be doing, but it still looks like it sucks. I still can't believe people pay to get leveled up in games.

Lineage is the worse for this. I seriously think ncsoft gets a kickback from the farmers because they don't do squat about the problem.

This eerily resembles facets of Ghost in the Shell.

In addition, I don't see much more than people trying to get by providing a service. It's not like they don't get paid.

There's like, 30 computers in that one small room. It's probably hotter than the dressing room at the Victoria's Secret fashion show in there.

WOW is pretty bad too, you won't have a problem buying gold on any server.

and if this depressed you, you should see a real sweatshop...doesn't look worse than alot of lan parties.

I was going to say, add in a lot of booze and it looks like the last time I had some of my guild over for a weekend lan party.

Does put a human face on those jerks to screw me over in-game to steal a mineral node or a chest out from under me though.

I wonder what the ratio of farmers to actual players is in games like WoW and Lineage....

You think this is bad, you should see what the other people have to do in order to earn a living. That said, having listened to the video rather than having to read it's subtitles, these people are pretty happy with what they have. If you think it's weird for them to be sleeping on a pad spread out on the floor, it might be interesting to note that most of Japan does the same thing. The 12 hour day is typical in China, and after the Tietou place broke up and they show Xiong Xiong's house, their conditions are probably actually better than typical.

They aren't the pathetic ones. The pathetic ones are those who are buying what they provide.

When will these freaks stop playing video games. Grow up! No self-respecting adult live in an online fantasy world!

Seemed completely fine to me...that wasnt a sweatshop.

And they are providing a service, as good as any other. If people are willing to pay for it, I dont see why not.

As soon as you stop posting in THIS online fantasy world.

Actually someone made a point about this on this forum or another. It may take someone 20 hours of play time acquire a certain amount of money in those games. They do this to purchase something that they believe will make the game more fun for them. Instead of takign 20 hours to farm all this money, they could work 2-3 hours and buy the gold they want for the game.

As for the leveling services, someone might get invited to play the game by a group of friends whos characters have already matured. In order to catch up the person could spend hours a day playing or just work a few hours and buy a character to play with them.

I do play wow, but ive never been serious enough to buy a character or money from these places. I understand why people do it.
