This time, Maryland, a Teenager and Airsoft.

Need more information. Witness said the teen was pointing the gun at the cop. If true may have been a proper shoot

St Mary's county is basically way out there. Small town county with barely anything special. Never even drove into it because it's that far from the DC Metro area.

Shot number 2 might be questionable with regards to what actually happened, but if no video exists....there isn't much more to investigate since the data is lost. As such, the cop will say his version of his events most favorable to himself; this might be actually true, it might not be.

Not sure what that guy was smoking though, acting the way he was such that two people called 911 on him.

Tamir Rice. 911 call about a person with a gun. PD pulls up, he's waving it around, they fire within seconds. Turns out to be a toy.

Knoxville. 911 call about a person with a gun. PD pulls up, locate him, he fires, they fire back.

Which one is this case?

Tamir Rice was a smallish 12year-old, the other two where 16. Tamir Rice wasn't even given a chance to drop the "gun," while this kid tried to charge the cop with knife after being shot.

I'll withhold my judgement for now pending release of more information.

Specifically, Airsoft (and other replica) guns are normally sold with an orange tip to prevent just this sort of incident. Of course, a lot of parents hailing from the land of utter stupidity buy the things for their kids and the allow the kids to remove the tips or paint them over (or even do it for them for reasons only God knows).

I haven't seen anywhere in the coverage thus far whether the gun the kid was pointing had that orange tip.

If it didn't have one, the shooting was legal and the parents are going to have to live with this. OTOH, if it did have the orange tip, I'd say things are going to probably get pretty bad for the officer who shot the kid.

I know they have an orange tip...but in the heat of the moment, that's a small detail to have to pick out.
If the entire thing were orange, that would be 1000x easier

Yeah, I get that. However, I suspect the one in this case probably didn't have one. Otherwise, the media would be screaming about it if it did. And, if it didn't have one, that goes 100% back on the parents.

In the State where I live, the legislature passed a law a few years ago totally banning Airsoft and replica guns unless they are either entirely transparent or are painted colors that make it clear that it is a toy and not a weapon. One of the very few things our otherwise worthless legislature and governor has done that I actually agree with.
