for some reason there is no sound coming out of the front left speaker anymore...this happened a couple times in the past and i just "tapped" the back of the reciever and it would come back on...but today nothing works...i even took it apart to look for a loose connection and couldnt find one

this is my second Sony reciever and the 2nd one to break...ARGH

every once in a while it will come back on for a second or two then go off again

Had to fix my brother's sony receiver recently for a similar problem. Left speaker would crackle/pop and then the receiver would go into protect mode. Located the general area of the poor solder joint, but couldn't find the exact one...ended up just resoldering about 20 points.

Typical sony electronics for you...

nothing...i just sat down to watch tv once and the sound only came through 1 speaker...it started happeneing actually a year ago, but only would happen once every couple months and if i tapped the top or back of the reciever it came back on...

the last 3 weeks its been happening all the time and tapping it no longer works

the first one was kinda my fault but nor really...the first one i moved into a new apartment and it was middle of hte summer and crazy hot even indoors...we were listening to cd's through it and basically it overheated and fried itself

thats what i figured the problem is...but when i took it apart i couldnt see any one that was really bad and i dont have any testing equipment here...i guess i could re-sodder all of them, but it would be a lot of work since they cram everything in there really tightly...and i dont really have the time right now for a big project

When I was in school, I had a part time job in an electronics store for 2 years. Of all the recievers we had, sony was the worst. We had more returns on this brand than anything else. I like sony tv's and some other things like md players and such, but for recievers they suck eggs. For me, the sound just wasnt there. I actually liked the Denon, Yamaha and Onkyo recievers a lot better. Heck, Pioneer was a lot better than sony. Same thing with car stereos.
One thing too, I remember some people were so brainwashed with the brandname that they wouldnt accept anything else other than sony. I guess they lost out.

Just curious...was the input from DVD? Have you swapped out the speaker wire or the cable from the player to the receiver?
