This sounds stupid...

But how can i check my RAM speed? It should be at 200 mhz, which i could swear it has always been, but CPU-z shows that its 161 mhz. I have 3 sticks of 512mb in here. any sure way to tell? Bus speed is 200mhz.

You're probably running on a divider.

open the bios and find out if you're running a divider. Are all 3 sticks PC3200 ram?

yeah...it had it on auto, which used to be 200 mhz, but apparantly dropped to 166 for some reason. so instead of choosing auto i set it to a 1:1 divider.

Well it's just that I've never had this problem before. I researched all of this stuff, built the computer, have built and fixed other computers, and i had this little weird problem. I guess i what i was actually wondering was why auto was set to sub 200mhz. Thanks a lot!

This is a pretty common problem with a lot of motherboards. To run stable with 3 sticks, the memory speed is automatically lowered. You can try to force it to run at 200 Mhz, and see if its stable. It should run at 200 Mhz default with only 2 sticks.

Even if one of your RAM DIMMs have an SPD entry only upto 333MHz, it will throttle the others down to its speed. Both my sticks (unmatched on a S754 system) do DDR400 but one of them is only rated for DDR 333. When set to auto, both run at 333. When I set them manually, they work fine at DDR 400.

You can check the SPD tables for each RAM DIMM in CPU-Z. Just set timings to manual and try booting at 200MHz (i.e. DDR 400).

BTW are you overclocking? Since you had it on auto, the mobo might have run it on a divider to make sure everything is stable.

Perhaps my previous post was oversimplified for some people. A question is asked before it ever reaches a post. Reading and searching only hones the question down to a sharper point. Thus, it remains that the only stupid question is one that isn't asked. An intelligent question is one that meets the previous requirement. Wisdom is being able to perceive the difference between intelligent and stupid answers. In many threads, the stupid answers outnumber the questions.
