This sounds like CPU overheating right?

So a few days ago, my PC shut down. It was late at night and I was half asleep and just decided to go to bed instead of figure out what happened.

Next morning, turned it on, halfways through post it shut down again. Very confused. I needed to move some music to my Zune so I got on my laptop and did that, then went out for the weekend, didn't get back until sunday afternoon.

Still was having the same issue. When I turn it on for the first time in awhile it lasts longer.

Anyway, I can get to the PC health area of my bios for a few seconds, and all I see is the CPU temp skyrocket to over 112 C and then it shuts down, which is pretty reasonable. I have an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield on an EVGA nforce 780i sli ftw.

I removed the stock HSF I have on it, and realized I have no idea how the thermal paste is supposed to look, but regardless I don't have any more. Reseating it hasn't solved any problems.

Is it reasonable to assume that if I run out to compusa and pick up a new heatsink and fan (and I'm also assuming more thermal paste), this problem should go away? Any other potential ideas?

If youre really showing 112C....get yourself a new HSF, thermal paste.

When applying thermal paste, a good rule of thumb I use is to put a small amount (say the size of a pea, or a large grain of rice) in the center of the proc, then put the HSF on to spread it over the top of the processor.

I dont have a core 2 quad myself, but I have a duo, and yeah, those things aren't supposed to be near 112C I believe. Thank god for advances in the thermal sensor and throttling department, otherwise youd be looking for alot more than some thermal paste and a HSF, imo.

edit: PS, make sure to take the existing thermal paste off, a paper towel to wipe off most, then if you have some iso. alcohol around clean it with that. If you dont its not an absolute killer but still.

WOW 112C. You really need to fix that - as it probably has already damaged your processor.

Most likely when you take off your heatsink the thermal paste will be a crust so you will have to ease it off. I also suggest buying a good brand of thermal paste. I tried that generic crap you get with some heat sinks - dont use it. And when you do put the paste on your processor make sure that it is a single drop in the middle as that has worked best for me, then evenly apply hte heatsink and make sure it is on tight to where it doesn't jiggle at all.
BTW I know the max temp for my Phenom II is 70C ....And I have no clue how you could even hit those temps lol.
