There is a really bad smell coming from the exhaust of this Silencer power supply! Has anyone else had any problems with a strong smell from their power supplies? Any idea what it is?

This is another Silencer unit and still the same awful stench...like some kind of chemical?! I really loved how quiet this unit is but I'm afraid I'll have to send them both back. Any suggestions on other quiet power supplies? I heard one's by Zalman or QuietPC are good as well? Should I just try modding a regular Enermax PSU with a Panaflo or other quiet fans? Please advise...this is depressing and I'm getting a migraine from all this crap in the air! (this better not be toxic :( )

Perhaps the powersupply is overheating and components are melting

OR it could be something crawled in there and died, and the silencer is blowing out its odor

Or it could be something else..

If you have had this PSU for a while, then stop using this PSU now as it may have developed a fault - but make sure its the PSU first, air coming out of the PSU has also gone through the entire PC first remember?

If the PSU is new, it may just be break - in.

Enermax do speed adjustable fan versions of their PSUs btw.

Not to be too crude, but does it smell like something is burning ... or something has died?

It smells like...possibly something melting or maybe something like varnish burning off & evaporating?! I don't know how to describe it. It's not your typical 'factory fresh' smell! Break in for a PSU? What exactly does this mean....like a new car smell? How long should this last? I guess I shouldn't try spraying any compressed air inside?

I need suggestions on other quiet PSU's? Anyone modded their PSU with quiet fans??

Had a similar smell come from a whole set up Enlight's (which they replaced) that had a bad batch of wire. It would somehow start to have resistance and would start to smoke (eventually). It smelled like burning insulation though (those of you who have used electric wire strippers know that smell). If its still under warranty send it back if you think its cooking.

But it might be the smell of the supply as it breaks in. I have really noticed some strong odors off of newer supplies.

New systems stink.........:)

Whatever it is that is cooking/evaporating off should be "fresh" scented......:)

I have noticed a very strong varnish/lacquer type odor from new mb's .......... most noticably ECS, PCChips, Amptron, Chaintech ...... etc.

The odor seems to diminish shortly after placing the mb into service ........ ?

What exactly is this smell? If it's a smoky smell, or smells like an alkaline battery (a metallic smell, like ozone), something is overheating or shorting out inside. My PSU reeked of ozone (or fertilizer, someone said) before it literally caught on fire and died.
Then again, it could just be the "burn-in" smell, ha!

I wouldn't think it's coming from the PSU.....Especially since you mention that this is the 2nd one you've tried. I'd guess it's more likely coming from another component, like clumsum mentions, maybe from the motherboard.

BTW - I've used Silencer PSU's before and never noticed a smell from them
