A coworker of my wife's got scammed last night.

He has a really nice lexus. He decided to sell it. He got a call from a person who lived in a town about an hour away. He agreed to meet the guy at a store parking lot so he could see the car.

Meets up with the guy, and offers to let the guy test drive it with him in the car. He gets out of the lexus to walk around to the passenger side, the guy looking to buy moved fast enough to get in the car and drive off.

He got his car stolen right in front of him. Now that takes some balls to pull off.

Cliffs:
-Guy wants to sell car
-Another guy wants to check out the car
-"Buyer" is offered test drive of the car with seller riding in passenger side
-"Buyer" quickly moves in the car and steals it before the seller could get in the passenger side.

Why is the person getting in the passenger side? So basically the seller gives the buyer the keys, and then the buyer just takes off? How did the buyer get to the store in the first place?

Lesson #1.

Turn car off and take keys. Ask for buyers drivers license and keep it with you while you ride in the car.

The seller left the car running while he switched sides. I assume the "buyer" got to the store parking lot first so he was probably dropped off.

Wow. Would suck to be your coworker. I feel bad for him but yeah, he never should have left the keys in the ignition while he was going around the car.

Don't most scams/crimes take some guts? I can't get by without my guts.

I love how whenever one of these threads are posted, there is always some dude that thinks he's the shizzors, that comes in and tells everyone what they would've done to prevent it, and how the person that got screwed is a stupid idiot.
Seriously.. unless you have the disorder called paranoia, when you're just about to sell a car, very few people is going to keep thinking about different ways they may get hijacked.
Don't get me wrong too, I'm not speaking about the people who are saying what could be done next time, like OdiN.

I agree

I have never sold a vehicle but I guess I am a bit naive. I probably could have made the same mistake.

It's always easier to tell someone else what they should have done.
