Good to know, learn something new every day. I was indeed brought up wrong (not joking). I likely offended the hell out of the family of one of my best friends when I was a kid, they were old-fashioned and very into etiquette and such I wore a hat always (and still do mostly) because I'm cursed with bad-looking hair, and never thought to take it off in his house or anywhere else for that matter. "Luckily", it seems to be falling out though :disgust:

Yep, take it off inside. Don't wear sunglasses inside, don't shake hands while wearing gloves, hold the door for women, stand up when a woman leaves the table, etc.

To do any less is just bad manners.

Ok... I read the whole thread looking for an explanation and no one explained "why" besides "just because" & "custom". *A preemptive FU to the first guy to tell me to google it* . I don't wear hats/caps, so it's never affected me, and I think wearing one inside a building is about as dumb as wearing sunglasses inside.

I think that the reasons would be of just a custom. probably did start along the lines at the one guy said about the knight removing his helmet before the king. This could also be related to a nervous king wanting to know for sure the guy in the armoured suit really was one of his knights.

Me, I can't really say much for my hair, thus I wear a hat almost anywhere I go, exceptions are made for more up-scale places. Though I do follow to other customs such a holding the door for women, polite etiquette around women, and my elders, etc...

I follow everything you mentioned there, expect the "stand up when a woman leaves the table", have never heard that one before, and would it not be pretty freaky when someone suddenly stands up within a group each time a woman leaves the table. I would, unless that person was letting her past or somethin.

it is a "rule" , not a custom in the Navy
you have to take off your "cover" (navy name for a hat) when you come inside and put it on as you exit a building/inside of the ship. it isn't optional. and wearing your cover into the galley (food place) is even more strictly forbidden, pissing off the cooks isn't a good thing to do

perhaps in the "old days" (like when more people served in the military/draft) this military rule was carried into the civilian sector by people after they left the military

Just another pointless tradition, but my father used to drill it into me so I still tend to take my hat off when eating or entering places that are upmarket. I don't bother in places like McDonalds though.
