This Place is Our Cheers Bar

I was thinking about it today, this place is basically the equivalent to what the bar is the TV show "Cheers" was supposed to represent- a place where you go to socialize with familiar locals where everyone knows your name and they are sometimes glad you came. Most importantly it's nice to come to a place where people have the same troubles,and are going through mostly the same stuff with mostly the same grown up nerd perspective.

It isn't the fanciest bar in town, in fact we know the establishment is dying because the original owner got hired to manage a chain restaurant and the only new customers in years are boozehounds off the street. Yet we all still keep coming here, wallowing in our life journeys until someone puts a lock on the door. Forty years ago I would have hung out at a bar for the same effect, but here we get the Cheer's comradery without the liver damage.

I know I am always glad I am a lifer here.

We have a brewery tasting room that on Monday I call our "Cheers". It developed years ago when they started a $2.50 pint day on Monday... and everyone knows your name, and your dogs name as it is dog friendly.

End result a group of locals made this a regular thing and has been our "Cheers" for about 6 years now. Even one of the regulars is 'Norm' 😉

Plus they make a great IPA, and had to go up to $3/pint recently.

Me too and I was trying to find out why. It isn't like the Anandtech homepage is on the cutting edge anymore. Heck I don't even really come here for a technology discussion anymore as the industry has gotten pretty boring unless you have the resources of Elon Musk.

I come here for the nerd perspective on home improvement, or child rearing, or life realities, or investing, or buying a home or tons of practical grown up stuff.

Its like a manlet reeducation camp and I can't let go.
 
I think it's because a majority of us joined this forum for their first build (don't lie!) back in the late 90's, early 2000's ... when we were late teens, twenties. Of course there are the old bastards here who joined just because they got bored with their life and the viagara stopped working. I won't mention any names.

(Most) of us are successful professionals, or in school on a 'good' path. However, we love to dish out the bullshit just as much as the next guy. It really is like a bar ... bullshitting with the guy next to you who you have no idea who he is or what he does. The difference is we've been here for 10 years and still don't "know" each other. I just relate shit to people:

Probably not. He was on a crash course, but he certainly managed it well. Eng @ nuke plant by day, degenerate drunk by night.

Smart dude when he was here. Helped me a TON with shit I didn't understand or simply just didn't give a damn about because I probably was too hungover and wanted to go back to bed. D: I used to just get in the ATOT vent server (RIP?) with him and do HW and bullshit. The only other member I remember being in there sometimes was LilPima just based on the fact she was a chick - LOL. It was fun while it lasted.

It's been a few years, but I would think he still lurks from time to time. He's also been known to create an account and post random updates in random threads from time to time. If highland ever posts again, he might have some more recent info....not sure if they communicated a lot, but South Carolinians are as thick as thieves, they are. IIRC, rudeguy was instrumental in getting John straightened out there at the end of his tenure here.

You may have summoned the Krakken, though. Who knows?

For whatever reason, I also used to get PMs from various CasioTech accounts and I have no idea why. There was a period some years ago when CT would send me messages from a new account every other day, lol.

Weird and weirder. I haven't seen any of those posts - but whatever. Do you know if he's still at that nuke plant down in SC? It was very close to GA IIRC. One of those islands down there. I would take that up in a heartbeat.

I don't recall the subject, but I remember his being brought up in some thread a few years ago, and he posted a quick response to something and disappeared. You would need someone with the AT search skills of RossMAN or possibly even YoYo to find that.
