I was thinking about it today, this place is basically the equivalent to what the bar is the TV show "Cheers" was supposed to represent- a place where you go to socialize with familiar locals where everyone knows your name and they are sometimes glad you came. Most importantly it's nice to come to a place where people have the same troubles, and are going through mostly the same stuff with mostly the same grown up nerd perspective.
It isn't the fanciest bar in town, in fact we know the establishment is dying because the original owner got hired to manage a chain restaurant and the only new customers in years are boozehounds off the street. Yet we all still keep coming here, wallowing in our life journeys until someone puts a lock on the door. Forty years ago I would have hung out at a bar for the same effect, but here we get the Cheer's comradery without the liver damage.
I know I am always glad I am a lifer here.
