So I got my car broken into for the first time. I <3 big city life. They managed to swipe my GPS, my 3 way power spliter, the face plate case for the cd player, and my cell phone charger. Kind of puzzled as to why the took the face plate case yet left the stereo with the face plate behind and left the power invertor. *Shrugs*

I was asking for it leaving the gps out in view. Lesson learned. That thing was handy though for navigating around this new area. Time to spend some hard earned unemployment dollars for a new I guess.

Personal message to the thief, get run over and then DIAF you scum!!

One thing I learned from driving into NYC ... glass car windows offer virtually no more protection then open air so unless you'ed leave somthing sitting in your vehicle with the windows/doors open you don't leave it in your car at all.

Solid advice. My friend said the same thing to me when I got out here. I guess I needed to learn this one the hard way.

I come from a really rural small town where most folks don't bother your stuff. Adjustment time, this isn't NE PA anymore.

Well I am unemployed but I am not getting unemployment so I am sort of joking. If I can find a replacement cheap on craigslist I might score it. I hope I don't have to buy mine back though :p

I got a job offer today that I will probably take so I should be back into the working world soon enough.

back on topic - thieves still suck

We don't lock our house and I leave my keys in the truck 24/7.

i could leave an open bag on money on my car seat and the odds are very good that it wouldn't be stolen.

That is exactly how it was like back home. I never used to lock my car, well I did at work but that is because I didn' trust those swine. Just a bit of an adjustment going from a town with about 6,000 people in it to a city like Seattle. Chalk it up to experience I suppose

My girlfriend's house is never locked, in fact, they went on vacation a few years ago and couldn't even find the house keys. All car doors are left unlocked, nobody messes with anything. Also Real Small Town USA.

I dont leave anything out in plain sight in my vehicle for just this reason. I have an iPod, several car chargers, expensive sun glasses and some items in the trunk, but you would never know by looking at the inside of my car. Sorry bout your luck

I am trying to look for the positives in this. I guess I would like to say thanks to the thief dude for not being a total dickbag, i mean atleast he didn't break my window.

I'm not sure I could deal with living in a big city. I too come from a small town and have lived here all my life. I like how you don't have to worry about getting mugged or raped or murdered, walking around is safe anytime, you can go in to grab a few groceries and leave your car running when it's cold out, at least where I live out of the city a bit you can leave cars unlocked. Plus the people, for the most part, are very friendly and down-to-earth. Nearest big city (Green Bay, WI) is two hours away.

Anyway... that sucks OP. If he didn't break your window, did you leave your car unlocked?

I drove around for 3 days now with the passenger door unlocked (a truck I am driving that doesn't have remote locks like my car does), with my iPod, power inverter, bookbag (with my laptop, some somewhat expensive headset, etc) and nothing happened to it (luckily).

Even though theft isn't a huge issue in my area, it occasionally does happen (lots of teenagers in the area so usually its moron teens doing it).

Happens to us all, the guy(s) who broke into my car were stupid too and luckily not much was taken. Get a Garmin Nuvi 200 if you're looking for a great little replacement GPS without breaking the bank.

Don't leave anything visible in your car. A friend of mine had his window smashed when he left his empty backpack in the back seat. There was nothing of value to take, but they assumed there was an ipod or something in there. They didn't even take the backpack.

If you have to take something with you, put it in the trunk.

I've had my window broken for some quarters in a visible tray back in the 1990s in Watts.

Seattle you say?
When I lived in Capital Hill I had a druggie break into my car, shoot up in the driver seat and pass out. My SO saw him in my car coming back from getting coffee. I came down ready to beat the hell out of him but he was passed out. Called the cops and they hauled him off. Its been broken into a few times since, minor things stolen. Now that I live on Alki, I haven't had any problems. *knocks on wood*

I showed up at a friend's apartment to find the police following a blood trail in the snow, because a thief had broken into an SUV and reached under the driver's seat to unbolt the amp for the stereo.

The owner had wrapped a coat hanger around it, and the coat hanger had double-edged razor blades soldered to it.

It could, but in this town, they would probably be laughed out of court.

i had a 76 impala with a 69 dollar stereo in it... they busted the back wing window to get in and steal the stereo, but didnt take the amps or speaker cabs out of the trunk and back seat area. there was also some cash in the glove box, im glad they didnt notice that. i left it there by mistake. that wing window costed 150 bucks to replace. i put cardboard in it instead and never had to lock my doors again. the crappy stereo was a temporary until i got the new deck in my car, as my jvc had blown a channel. i guess i should be happy they hit it before i put the new one in.

The d-bag that broke into my car cut my battery terminals, and then jacked my battery.

I had a self powered siren though, I guess he thought that would stop it.

i had an employee get arrested for doing that. the thief cut his hand all up, ended up suing the guy and winning. he also spent a week in jail for "assaulting" the thief with xacto blades.

my bro's car stereo got ganked before.

my car window was smashed before, and thieves used my door remote and broke into my attached garage and stole... beer and frozen food  :|

the odd part is they took one of those old 'bubba' kegs that has week-old yucky beer in it. ew
