It's cheating. It shows you how to do it when the outside cups are both turned down and then asks you to do it with both the outside cups turned up.

I can mimic the moves they make, but it faces all the cups down, because in the beginning of the game, the cups are down, up ,down, but in the beginning of of the demonstration, the cups are up, down, up.
Blah.

It's impossible because of the different state. I remember working it out and there was absolutely no way to do it in the "altered" beginning state.

If you work it out this way, you can prove it:
101+110=011
101+101=000
101+011=110

011+110=101
011+101=110
011+011=000

000+110=110
000+101=101
000+011=011

110+110=000
110+101=011
110+011=101

Thus the only four states are: 000, 011, 101, and 110. There is no way to get to 111. The game demos in the inverted state, which only allows for 111, 100, 010, and 001.
