Hello there Guys, I just had to share this BREAKING NEWS with you guys. It finally paid of having my cousin work at INTEL. So I got a call on Tuesday (March 18, 2008) from my Cousin say if I wanted a Processor and of course I said hell ya. So guys guess what Processor I got? Give Up?

The Processor I got is ?Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 Processor?. Clocked at 3.2GHz with 12MB of Cache and with 1600MHz Front Side Bus. (Ya Baby!) I was building a New Rig Anyway. I was planning to get the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450, but getting the Extreme Edition Instead is Welcome Any Day.

1) Buy X48 Chipset Motherboard: Guys, the BIGGEST Question is, do I need to BUY X48 Chipset Based Motherboard for this Processor. I know that Asus Maximus Formula SE does support 1600FSB after a Bios Update, but from what I understand that 1600FSB isn?t OFFICIALLY Supported. So can you guys give me your comments on what should I do.

2) Air Cooling Solution Recommendations: I am guessing that ?Thermalright? is gona be the front Runner, Am I right? If any other?s Please share. Over-Clocking right now I am not sure. (Maybe Yes or Maybe No)!

3) Memory Recommendations: I am looking at getting the 4GB (2xGB) sticks with the PC-8500. I have narrowed the list to Three Brands. If you guys have any other recommendations, Please share them.

4) Power Supply Recommendations: I have the Consair HX620 Watts right now. Is this enough for my Rig or Do I need to get another one?

lets get to business...

1) You want X48 or 790i, the only 2 chipsets that support 1600 FSB out of the box.
Yes X38 and 780i can do 1600 FSB, but its not officially supported and a bios flash wont make it any better.
Those chipsets were not engineered to run at 1600 FSB, and even though they can do it, its always considered an overclock.

2) Air cooling? You just saved 350 dollars on the cpu, I'd say invest in some pimpin water cooling!

3) Crucial 2x2GB is my recommendation out of those three.

4) Based on your list, yes that PSU is more than adequate.



And finally, 400 x 10 or or 400 x 10.5 easy as pie, dont make that potential go to waste..

To add to what's been mentioned:

TRUE (yes, you'll need to lap it for best results) + two Noctua P12s in push-pull (remember to buy the extra set of clips when you order).
2x2 GB DDR2-1066 Corsair (very high binned Powerchips ftw) or the Crucial.

If you think the Corsair HX620 isnt up to the task then instead of getting another one, you can simply get the Corsair HX1000.

I guess the only motherboards capable of supporting 1600FSB out of the box is X48 and the 790i. You could consider these two chipsets. However both of these chipsets require DDR3 which means getting 4GB of those would cost alot. (Im sure that there is an X48 variant with DDR2)

Personally I would go with a P35 or X38 board, neither officially support 1600fsb but both will run it stable without a hitch (hell, I've been running a P965 board at 1800fsb for almost 2yrs no problem) and with P35 or X38 you can use DDR2 and not have to get the insanely expensive DDR3.

Thats the beauty of an unlocked multi chip! You don't need a high FSB motherboard, you don't need high speed ram (any ddr2-800 is fine)

And the 620HX is more than enough PS, you could easily run that rig on the 520HX and still have power to spare.

FSB world records are set on 965 commandos and 965 DFI boards with 685mhz penryns.

it can do 600 to 700 mhz fsb, but like said before, it's considered an "overclock"

And the QX9770 is considered an overclocking chip

My point is that most everybody here overclocks and runs their mobo "out of spec" on the FSB, if someone gave me the fastest CPU currently made with an unlocked multi the last thing I'm going to worry about is does my board officially support a 400mhz FSB. And with an unlocked multi if running FSB over spec concerns you, downclock it to 333mhz and up the multi to 12.

Or if your really that concerned, buy a $300 mobo that officially supports fsb1600, buy $500 worth of DDRIII ram, stick that $1200 CPU in there and run it all at stock speed:thumbsup:

I constantly see recommendations here to pair an E8400 with a $75-90 abit or gigabyte P35 board and o/c it to 4ghz 450+fsb and nobody seems to have a problem with that.
But throw a QX9770 in there and suddenly it's OMG the board doesn't officially support 1600fsb
