"Hughes is a fresh face that America can embrace. When Lipinski grabbed her medal moment, not everyone applauded. There was always something slightly discomforting about the child star, who had left home at a young age to train, who hadn't been to school since the fourth grade."

WTF?!

"She finished with the bronze medal and an unclear legacy. She has been America's most popular skater for the past six years, but will probably never reach the gold medal pantheon. She is, however, the most gracious of losers."

most gracious of losers?! WTF!

``Some people never have the performance of their lives,'' Hughes said.

Kwan knows that.

ugh, whats with all the criticism, even if she didnt win, you dont write stuff like "she is the most gracious of the losers". geesh...

"She is, however, the most gracious of losers."

Big f***ing deal.

If gold is so easy to win, it wouldn't be worth anything.

I'm sick of these idiots who label anybody who doesn't win the gold as "losers."

Yeah that mature Kwan is a real pain in my asche. I wish she were more like hughes, who was thanking some friend from home.

It's a real shame when people remotely capable of appreciating the medal don't win (not to say that kwan is certainly capable, but she seemed a whole lot more capable than say slutskya, who explained her desire for fame and fortune, or hughes)

Congrats for Hughes and all, but Kwan isn't so bad, and maturity (which she has) is a good quality.

Like Capn and Russ said, calling someone a gracious loser is a compliment. The writer isn't taking a shot at Kwan. What is it un "PC" to use the word "loser" now?

What was the writer supposed to say? "She is, however, the most gracious of people who's performance was good, but not quite as good as the person that was awarded the higher medal. Not that there is anything wrong with not winning, she is still a special person in her own way." Does that work for you?

Yup, loser as in didn't win. Not the slang loser as in worthless piece of crap.
