This may seem like a daft question, but what type of socket does the Barton use?

Hi,
I never read up that much on the Barton cos for some reason i thought that the barton was a server processor. Ive just found out that it aint.
Anyway, What type of socket does the Barton use?
Does it still use socket A?

The reason i ask, is that a while ago a brought a SLK-800 to go with my XP1800, and was planning to use it on my next upgrade to a faster AMD chip + Motherboard.
I was wondering, as well, if the SLK-800 can be used to cool a Barton, and that maximum Barton speed that it`ll be able to do.

Thanks in advance

It's my understanding that the Barton is compatible with the newer socket A chipsets like the Nforce2 and KT400.

As far an using the same HSF, I don't think it will be a problem.

Barton will be socket A although I dont think it will use SOI which is a big downer but oh well.

yep, hammer will use socket 754

and socket 900 something for server version still i believe right?
(atleast thats how it was b4, 754 for clawhammer, 900something for sledgehammer)

yep, it think it's some thing like that
socket 754 will be for clawhammer(Athlon 64) and socket 900 will be for sledgehammer(Opteron)

What about the SLK-800. What do you think that the maximum barton speed will be that it can do?

any speed id say
its a big mofuggin heatsink (same with alpha pal8045 and swiftech mcx462) and will cool any socket a cpu efficiently

Cool (Pun intended).
Of course, i`d have to change the YS-Tech Silent fan to another higher powered one to use the higher clocked Bartons. Or do you think that i`d be alright with just the YS-Tech Silent?

depends if you overclock or not lol
im gonna get an slk800+82cfm sunon and hope for the best
i could probably use a stealth, but 20-30CFM of air dont cut it for me haha :)

I value my hearing, comes in handy belive it or not. lol
I`d probably get an auto ajustable fan or something that provides more air flow than my current fan.

I'm not familiar(though I've heard it mentioned many times) with that heatsink, does it use the clip or the mounting holes? The reason I ask is that many of the newer SocketA mobos don't have the holes, so if that hs does use them, choose a new mobo wisely.

The SLK-800 uses a 3 clip design, it uses all three clips on both sides of the socket. So MoBo holes arnt too much of a problem.
