yes, it's distributed computing, I think. Instead of 1 computer tackling a single (usually very complex) problem, its divided into parts for several computers to crack. That's what the "join team anandtech - rc5" thing is all about you've seen in people sigs.

They pay you for using your computer to crack their code.
