This may be a stupid question, but what can my Pioneer DVD-106S **NOT** do?

I need to know it's limitations because my Plexwriter 16x10x40 can't READ subchannel data, but it CAN WRITE it. Does anybody know if my DVD-106S can READ subchannel data and/or do anything else it might need to?

Thanks,
Epsilon

Not really, the only problem that I have w/ my pioneer is that the time that is required to actually launch anything is a bit longer - I'm told that it just might be my DVD-drive, but the access time really boggles down the experience for me - at times, if I get too far ahead of myself, the drive crashes on me. :(

i didn't know the bit about no digital. It also cannot read subchannel data in audo or data tracks. That is the main reason I didn't buy it.

That sounds like your drive, mine is FAST, faster then any CDRom I've used in the past.

Here's a little trick I discovered with the Pioneer 106S . . . if you have CD boot active in BIOS.

When I switched to the 106S, I noticed that the boot time was about 10 to 20 seconds longer while the 106S was "looking" for boot media.

By leaving an Audio CD in the drive, that time is almsot eliminated and the total boot time is noticeably faster.

So far I have not had it refuse to do anything I want it to do. It reads fast enough for CD burning on the fly.

In Windows 2000 and XP, you don't need to worry about a separate digital out cable, it's all done thru the IDE cable.

thanks Strafe, I was wondering how the heck it was pulling the sound data digitally with only analog cables hooked up!

I believe that the only DVDs that can read sub-channel data are the Toshibas.

*me kicking myself for getting a pioneer DVD*

But the Toshibas are only $99 (CDN) and alot of people would like to buy a Pioneer, because aside from the sub-channel stuff (which most users don't know or care about) the Pioneers are great drives

Hmm, it won't mow your lawn or do your taxes...

One thing I noticed my 114S won't do is accept those new combo cd/dvd discs. These are the ones that have an audio cd on one side and when you flip it over it's a dvd. I tried sliding it in and the drive started making some weird noises that I hope didn't mess anything up.

You may not ever use one of these discs. But just fyi. The one I used was from www.d-rom.com
