This may be a dumb question but...

Suspended PSUs seem to be less noisy? If your case does not come with rubber grommets, can you add them?
Nubies want to know...

I never considered using one but a pad is made that fits between the PSU and case.

Just like the ones made for fans only cut to fit the PSU. Never used either.

I think what you're looking for is a blister-wrap kit by Antec with silicone-rubber gaskets for the PSU and fans. I've seen them sold at Circuit City, but you can probably find them at several web-resellers under the Antec brand name.

FrozenCPU.com also has the product for different fan sizes.

I don't see why you couldn't put a bead of silicone rubber sealant on the PSU casing where it is going to mate up with the case panel, so long as the bead is of fairly consistent thickness. Let it harden, and you have a slightly crude but effective "grommet."

These things do help slightly. It is a low-tech, incremental improvement, and many such improvements add up to a cumulative reduction in noise.

Here you go. These are the ticket for what you're talking about. They're made of a clear silicone gel-like material. I use one with my PSU and I use the fan gaskets (same material, just a different shape/size) with all my cooling fans. They're solid, well made, and very inexpensive. I recommend them wholeheartedly. :)

I can't say whether they're absolutely needed in my case, as I installed them when I built my computer and never ran it without them. I'd guess that some cases do vibrate more than others, particlarly lightweight ones with thin panels. With devices like fans and PSUs that can, theoretically, develop a resonance between themselves and the case frame, these are effective dampeners.

PS: These are less expensive than the Antec ones and, IMHO, better quality. I've checked out the Antec ones as well and wasn't that impressed. They felt a little more rigid than these do.

I use the Vantec PSU dampener as linked above and 2 120mm ones for my 120mm fans. I cant say how much of a difference they make really but I dont feel much vibration coming from my case.

For a few bucks, you can reduce a little bit of noise. Vibration is more of an HDD issue but every little helps. Compared to a new case or new heatsink, these are relatively inexpensive and easy to install.
