Any one care to comment? I have an older 9 year old Onkyo..still works fine, but would like the upconversion and the HDMI switching features to make it easier to use... any you guys have one?

Which Marantz?

I have a 11 year old Marantz CD player that's still going strong. Keep using it as my CD's sound better than they do played on my DVD player.

Nice unit at a great price. $300 for a receiver with HDMI audio (though only PCM -- make sure your Blu-Ray player decodes them all), a decent amount of power, and pre-outs if you want more juice... A steal.

I agree- I almost jumped on this actually-
Like S44 stated- be sure your BR player decodes the lossless audio- and as far as the upconversion, it will not upconvert and display over HDMI, you'll need to run components to your tv as well.
From what I've read, it should sound amazing, and it's a great deal- main reason I'm not going w/ this one is that I really am interested in the new dynamic volume feature of the new denons.

Yeah that is an awesome feature, and want it.

I am torn about getting a receiver or not, but this Marantz has me tempted. I don't need up-convert because blu-ray player does that, and computer handles the rest of my content and does it as well.

Although does the pre-outs on this work with my Logitech z-5300's using RCA>headphone jack cables? Something like these type cables with RCA going into the pre-outs on the receiver, then the headphone jack going into the amp on the sub (obviously not that cable, because that's for 7.1 systems and I have a 5.1)?

Looks pretty good, especially for $300. Might also be worth looking at the Onkyo 606.

This is true for lots of receivers, but I always laugh when I get down to the power consumption part of spec sheets, and the maximum consumption is less than the claimed output!

90x7=630 watts
max consumption=500 watts

We must harness the technology of this tiny nuclear reactor to solve our country's energy crisis! Imagine, a receiver under the hood of every new car, outputting more energy than it takes, constantly refilling its own batteries and outputting excess energy onto the grid! Perpetual motion is now possible! ;)

I would guess that the power transformer is only rated for 400VA, and is maybe 87% efficient. 90 watts is what you get if you're not using any of the other six channels.

OTOH, Marantz gear is usually good stuff - they went through a rocky patch during the 80s, but the last two decades or so have been full of good products. They are, however, generally also obscenely expensive.

Yeah, my STR-DA2400ES is like that - Sony claims 100wx7, but the total power draw is only 350w. Then again, pretty much everyone is guilty of overstating the amp section on their receivers, as Thom noted. One of these days, I'll suck it up and buy a "real" amp (hooray for pre-outs!), but my setup is plenty loud as it is, so that can wait. (The good news, really: most people don't need nearly as much amp as they think they do.)

That's too funny. And, I want to meet the guy using 90W (or >10W) on any surround channel.

I'm guessing people who use multi-stereo for music would be the most likely case...

I got one of these from the same place. It says it is a refurb. I can't see a blemish on it and it works great. That is NO guarantee that they are all this good!

Good luck on your quest
