I wince when I have to remove a splinter, but cutting off your arm. I have to hand it to this guy, he deserves much respect. I still cant see how he stayed awake while hacking off his own arm. I figure he would have passed out due to pain or shock.

I'm not a doctor, but depending on how the boulder fell on his arm, it may have cut off blood flow and did so much nerve damage that he wasn't feeling *much* pain in that area anyway.

yeah thats what i was thinkin too. After that many days like that he probably wasn't that coherent anyway so he didn't feel the full impact of what he was doing. Hey i am coherent and i can't even think about doing that to myself.

No doubt. I don't think there is any human alive that could cut off their own arm with a pocket knife and not pass out from pain/shock. I don't think you could even finish the job. This is assuming your arm is healthy. But, if it had been crushed for the past two days, it might be numbed and dead enough for you to amputate without untolerable pain.

Maybe he tied the tourniquet and left it there for a while to numb the arm?? Either way, this guy puts Rambo to shame.
