I had to adjust the some of the power settings on my computer to get my iphone to sync properly. I have no idea why it worked but it did, maybe yours is a similar issue.

i tried this but cannot test as i am now in recovery mode that is not being recognized by the computer or in itunes

You try DFU mode? It's a bit more low-level than Recovery mode.

Most people end-up in Recovery mode while trying to get into DFU mode. You can tell the difference because the screen will be black in true DFU mode (no "connect to iTunes" image).

my other machine recognizes the device, but seems to be forcing me to download ios5 and restore it to that and of course it's taking FOREVER to download

anyway to force it to restore to an older version? 4.2?

I spent a couple hours trying to update my iPod touch a while back. Gave up, such a pain in the ass. Anyway, to get the iPod out of recovery mode without using another system use RecBoot.

could be something with the USB port. when i bought the ipad 2 i was surprised that it didn't charge while conneted to my lenovo. supposedly it can charge on a MBP. i've read a lot of PC OEM's cheap out on internal components

Not trying to offend, but your post is pretty stupid. The USB standard was not designed to power something as hungry as a 10" screen iPad.

The standard for powered USB ports requires that they provide at least one half amp. iPad requires more than 4 times as much.

Apple used to sell laptops with UN-POWERED USB ports so you would be forced to buy a firewire webcam (or deal with the hassle of using a powered hub).

Apple has stopped signing SHSH blobs for 4.2, so you can't downgrade if you don't have an SHSH blob backed-up from the time when Apple was signing this (using a tool like TinyUmbrella).

I had issues where the following resolved my issue:

Unplug iOS device by removing cable from PC
Reboot PC
Plug in USB cable into a different port once logged into windows

This fixed my problems, go figure.

The USB standard continues to evolve....much like ethernet now can put out some decent power.

You pretty much have to have USB 3.0 to power many modern devices.

Beleive it or not, this could be down to something as simple as a bad USB cable. Or incorrect USB driver. Thats what the 16xx errors usually point to..

Its definitely something USB related.

I had an iPhone 3G that would give 1600 errors with any Jailbreak back in the WinPwn/PwnageTool days even though it worked fine with official Apple FW. A replacement phone worked fine with the same cables and PCs. Never figured it out and was only able to JB with custom firmware in REGULAR restore mode (not DFU). Never would have guessed except that someone with the exact same problem suggested it online. DFU is lower level with less to go wrong, so why would restore mode be more able to load CFW?! Go fig.

I had these errors when trying to update firmware through a virtual image.. Apparently apple has some way to check the usb port firmware or controller and it borks firmware updates if it's not recognized.


It might be worth buying a pci usb card...

I don't have this problem because I don't update my IOS. I find the drawbacks of updating like lost apps and music far outweigh any perks of updating.

My laptop charges my iPad - just not while its powered on. If I leave it connected while turned off, it will charge, but very slowly. You can't ever see if charging because it stops as soon as the screen comes on.
