wow, games cost like $70+ with DLC these days...that's why I buy so few titles upon release.

amen thats why i wait for them to go on sale in steam..

but oh yea... this is an origin release only which most likely means i wont see this game ever on steam at 20 dollars.. :colbert:

EA's so incredibly greedy and makes infinite money. That's why their earnings-per-share for 2011 was negative. That's right, EA LOST money last year. Jus' sayin'.

Well, I for one am glad this is DLC and not integrated into the game.

A Prothean squad member is an inane idea even before you give it the Ganja-man accent. This way I save $10 and keep one epically stupid idea out of my personal copy of ME3.

I wonder what the second DLC will be. I'm guessing a talking velociraptor squadmate, or the long awaited Reaper renegade squadmember.

You might want to use spoiler tags there, not everyone wants to know.

Anyway, it could very well pay off IMO, given the quality of Bioware's writing. As goes for all things in this thread:

All we can do right now is speculate. Please reserve hard judgments until the game is played.

Is any of this actually going to stop ME3 from selling millions of copies on the X360? Nope.

Not to mention PC sales. As Bioware mentioned, The $100+ collector's editions are already sold out and the game's over a week from being released. I imagine standard-issue orders will far outweigh them.

Dragon Age had a ton of DLC. Does anybody here feel that it was a poor value?

The two objections to zero day DLC are that it is raises the price of the finished product if you buy it, or lowers the amount of the content in the game if you don't buy it. So? Both of these are relative changes that say nothing about the absolute value of the game. The second one isn't even necessarily true for many titles where the expected value of the DLC is what funds the development of that content.

What actually matters is whether the game is worth the price it is being sold for. If a game had 200 hours of content then they could remove 20 for a DLC and it would still be a better deal than an equivalently good game with no DLC but only 30 hours of content.

If Mass Effect 3 turns out to be a poor value for the money then that will be a good reason to avoid it. However, getting upset about DLC shows a lack of critical thinking if you haven't played the game or read any reviews that suggest it lacks content or is overpriced. You are not being wronged as a consumer, it is just a different pricing strategy that has no bearing on the absolute value of the product.

Finally, someone is talking sense in this thread.

Ack! I still rage over getting ripped off with Leiliana's Song and Witch Hunt. Most worthless 'games' I've ever bought. They didn't add squat to the game, didn't add to or enhance the story in any way, and didn't resolve anything with the storyline.

Its very rare I buy a DLC, because I am mostly done with games long before they release the updates. But one thing I noticed was as Mr Biscuit was saying how well the demo run the cutscene was stuttering away in the background. Its a technical problem that seems to be highly prevalent with this demo and while its not indicative of final quality its kind of ironic that within 5 seconds of praising the technicalities of the game it starts messing around.

I hate 0 day DLC's like everyone else but they make them because people buy them. In many ways DLCs are better than the system we had before where we wanted more but whether we got it was random. Getting bugs fixed and more content depended on the charity of the developer and the publisher. Now they have a monetary incentive as they can sell us updates with more content.

When we consider the cost of making a game has gone up 10-100 times since 1995 and the number of sales has not grown in line they do have to make those extra costs up somehow, these are businesses after all. DLCs are just one way they are increasing their revenue to help pay for all the additional costs. We are very lucky that PC games are as cheap as they are, they have effectively halved in price over 15 years which combined with the cost increases means its impressive they are still in business at all.

Most of the people who complain about zero-day DLC simply have no idea just how much content is abandoned and discarded in large games.

I remember reading an interview with the developers of the original Deus Ex. There was one level that had you sneaking around the inside of The Whitehouse. Ultimately it was dropped from the game for various reasons and never saw the light of day.

If that had happened now that same level could have been released as part of DLC.

i dont understand how i spent $115 on earthbound for snes 15 years ago but people are whining about having to spend an extra $10 on DLC.

games are CHEAP, even with DLC.

Because that's one game you spent that on, that wasn't an industry trend.

Well, to me personally, it is more about the completeness of the game than the extra 10.00. If the content is essential, just put it in the game and charge more. If it is not essential, couldnt you wait a while to get a few more dollars out of me?

I just like to feel that when I purchase a game and finish it, I have actually accomplished something and come to the end of the story. I have less problem with DLC that comes out a few months after the original game, but when it comes out on day 1, it just feels like the original game is missing something. I know I could buy the CE or the base game plus the DLC, but is still doesnt feel right. I know this may not make sense in logical terms, but it is just my personal feeling.

Yeah I agree.... tons of bullshit, I want to like and play this game, but EA sure is making it fucking hard.

If it was Steam, no Origin, and preorder got you the required 10 dollar DLC, I would pre-order it today, as it stands I do not plan on spending money on it to promote this kind of bullshit in gaming.

I have been a gamer for over 20 years. Price of the game has always been 59.99 from what I can remember.

I rather pay 59.99 + DLC than $89.99 with all the unneccessary contents they package with.

I love all EA titles and I love what they have done so far with all their games (except DA2 and few others).

I will continue to support their games as long as they don't go too crazy with DRM and charging for playing time.

Finally, somebody without an inflated sense of entitlement that runs rampant on the internet. I remember getting NES games that cost a ton and only had a few hours worth of real content. It's amazing what people here will rage about.

The OP said it makes his blood boil. This trivial matter makes him that angry? Isn't there something better to be angry about? A few extra dollars for entertainment will make his "blood boil." His life is seriously easy then. He should be happy.

Ninja turtles, Rescue Rangers, any power glove game, loony tunes game, and some others that i cannot really remember. Sure they were fun and great (at least for a kid) but man were they short compared to the games of today.
