Magazine Cover Guy Has Checkered Past
Eligible Bachelor Has DWIs On Record

POSTED: 10:39 am EST March 7, 2006

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- The face gracing the front of a Seacoast magazine is not only one of the area's most eligible bachelors, he's also a man with a past.

Soon after Portsmouth magazine hit newsstands with its annual salute to bachelors, a local paper did some digging on the 26-year-old cover boy and found that Jared Hogan may not be the man of every woman's dreams.

"He fit the profile," publisher Thomas Giovanniello Jr. said. "We moved the proverbial needle, as far as response."

But Hogan has a record dating back to 1997. He has been fined twice for drunken driving and been charged with driving with a suspended license, reckless conduct and criminal mischief.

"He ran afoul in years past," Giovanniello said. "We didn't know it when we brought him in, and we'll just deal with the cleanup."

Giovanniello said that the magazine may do more research when picking bachelors in the future.

"We'll definitely revisit how we choose covers and how we choose people," he said.

Hogan has tended bar at Avalon in Boston and other area clubs and also does carpentry on the side.

"I had a couple of DWIs," Hogan said. "It's not like I murdered someone. I was young and stupid."

Hogan said that he shouldn't be judged by conduct in his past.

"Everything they said was true, but come on. It's in my past," he said. "You can't dwell on the past. You've got to move onto the future. The past is the past. That's why it's called the past."

Hogan said that he hasn't gotten in trouble in more than five years.

But even if women don't mind his past, they might be startled to learn one more thing.

"But they left one simple detail out," Hogan said. "I'm gay."

Hogan said that his only concern is the negative attention the rap sheet has caused.

"It will be nice to get behind this for Jared's sake," Giovanniello said.
