I was reading the local paper yesterday and came across this article about ditching a traditional landline in favor of VOIP. Its not that informative, but I suppose it would be useful for someone who knew nothing about the technology. This part at the end made me chuckle though:

Also, many fax machines and digital video recorders have difficulty communicating with VOIP service.

WTF is this guy talking about? I cant see how a DVR and VOIP could possibly be related.

Unless I'm a moron and just pwned myself.

CAn't see the relation myself. I can for a fax though, since they are analog and therefore wouldn't work on a voip line (i think)

Don't some DVR's (like TiVo) have to be connected to a phone line?

Getting schedules, guides, ordering pay per view stuff.

He may be confusing it with digital phone service? I don't know, I know that we had to have a separate line run for the fax machine at my last job because it wouldn't work through the phone system. DVRs often plug into phone lines for PPV and such.

Yup, Tivo needs a phone line to dial up the 800 number for the updated schedules (if you don't have it connected to your network, that is).

That's because the cable box uses the cable network itself for those operations. Many DVRs require a phone line if there is no inband management capabilities.

DVR/Cable boxes have in the past used regular phone lines for PPV, billing, SW updates etc... all this is slowly moving to data-based solutions, i.e. directly over the Coax, or Eth...
